Hot water heater will not fit
 

Hello,
I just purchased a brand new A-18480 hot water heater for my 1930 Tudor from Snyder's Antique Auto Parts. It seems to be a great heater, but I can not figure out how to make it fit in my car. It will not fit on the passenger side because of the gas line and carb control/choke. It kind of fits on the drivers side just to the right of the steering column, but my feet hit it when I hit the brake. This could cause a dangerous situation.

Has anyone installed one of these heaters? Have any pictures/advice?

Have you contacted Snyder's? Those people live and breathe Model A's and T's. Every time I've had a question I've called and have been put in touch with Don or Tom and they have the answer you need. Give 'em a try.

There isn’t a lot of room in there. I had thought about doing a hot water heater, but since I found a big crack in my exhaust manifold and now have a brand new one I decided to try a manifold heater.

A manifold heater does a great job in southern Mi.

I talked to Snyder's today and they said no-one there had ever put one in themselves, but they have talked to several customers that had. It sounded like most had been installed in the Fordor model and some were mounted on the floor and some were somehow mounted on the passenger side in the front and a few were even mounted in the back.

They said they did not have any pictures or additional information they could provide to me, but assured me some of their creative customers had figured out a way to do it. They did ask that when I figured something out that I send pictures to them so they can show others. Basically, they were not any help....

The good news is that I am creative and not afraid to try things. If I had a Fordor I probably would try to make it into a center console between the seat and the shifter and add some cup holders too. Since I have a Tudor I can't do that because the seats have to flip forward to allow people to get into the back seat. So i am going to try to mount it on the passenger side. My big challenge is going to be making a new fuel line that routes around the heater.

I live in Southwest Michigan and I agree that a manifold heater does an OK job. The problem is my wife says when the manifold heater is open there is a lot of noise that comes into the car through that little hole. There are times my wife stays in the car when I go into the store. The manifold heater does not work well when parked and idling. The hot water heater should work quite well when the car is parked and idling.

I will post pictures if I figure this out and make it work well...

I’ve looked for pictures on completed installation, and I don’t recall seeing any in the past. Good luck! I hope you are very successful.

Just make sure you don't lock yourself into a big job when you have to take the floor boards out. You have to be able to work on the car out on the road. Good luck.

There's a kit to cut and splice the floorboard so you can change the battery without removing the whole board. Would be a good idea here I think.

My dad's old sedan had so many heater hose holes in the right side of the firewall it looked like Swiss cheese. Must have had several different heaters in it over the years.



Do a search over on the HAMB, I know I've seen threads over there about hot water heaters. I have one I need to get in my Tudor sometime, but no time this year....again, haha.

I bought and rebuilt a vintage heater, maybe came from JC Whitney or a place like that. After trying to fit it into car found it was too big to fit . What I am doing is installing a Chinese diesel heater, they are small and work very well. I put one in my 16x12 shop, look on eBay, I brought it for 99$. If you drive in cold weather and have a 12 volt system it is a good heater. Truckers use them to heat the sleepers when parked. Remember the gas heaters for VW Bugs kind of of like that but safe.

Try looking for a SouthWind gas heater. Many A's used them.

Click on "go advanced", then click on the paper clip icon (attachments)

I clicked on advanced and the clip but it does not take me to the album photos.

After clicking on the paper clip icon you get a small window "Manage attachments", then you have to click on "choose file", then "upload"

Tried going to manage attachments but can't get to photos in album. Not user friendly --- will try to do new post with pictures.

Tried to do pictures with new thread. Same problem. If someone can tell me how to attach the album photos in a post, I will be happy to post them. The manage attachment function only refers me to computer photos. I cannot easily locate the originals. Why have album photos if you can't easily share them on postings?
