How to identify 6 or 12v starter motor?

I pulled the starter out of my 51 f1 to access & remove the exhaust header from the 8ba. The truck is completely converted to a 12v system and, based on starting performance, I believe it is a 12v starter. So I clean off the external road grime and pull off the brush inspection cover and observe the brushes appear seated maybe too low in their respective pockets. Also, the starter drive is worn, although this starter has worked without fail. I found another starter motor in my parts stash, perhaps something I acquired for my ‘49 mercury, also 12v, (and simply forgot about it), with a rebuild tag from 2006 that could be 12v. but want to make sure before I try running it. Also, on this one, the starter drive is different than the one i’ve been running in my truck and won’t likely fit. (Dennis Carpenter catalog has this drive pegged as a 56-61 for comparisons sake). So how to determine the 6v starter against the 12v? I don’t see any external markings on either of my motors. Do I look for something internally? Thank you.

Fit it and try it. The other one is probably 6v. Ford went to 12v in 56(ish)

The 12v inertia starters has 3 fields compared to 2 for a 6v if i remember right...

My 52 Merc says 6 volt right on the tag but it cranks just fine (but faster) the few times I used a 12 volt battery to start it.
