Tips On Installing Stock Exhaust Pipes
 

Got my NOS cross over and exhaust pipes today. First challenge was how to get the exhaust pipe under the car. Figured that out by letting the front axle hang and removing the big rubber frame bumper. Now which hole is it suppose to go through on the frame at this point? Old exhaust went through the far right hole. This pipe doesn't seem to like either hole, not lining up.

The exhaust pipe routes through the hole with the small hole for a clamp beside it, third hole from the center of the vehicle. Attached is a photo of a 1936 chassis at the Ford V-8 Foundation in Auburn, IN.

If you are trying to install a straight thru muffler in place of the original offset oval muffler, it's not going to work without fabricating some custom made exhaust pipe.

Are you 100% certain you have NOS pipes?

I suppose you can't be 100% of anything but I bought them as NOS from 3rd Gen and they still had the old ford tags on them. I got them in I had to heat up and straighten the big pipe. Yes, I realize that red muffler is not stock style, that was what was on it when I bought it, I think I can make it all work. I suppose in a perfect world the pipes should not be rubbing against the frame but that seems impossible to accomplish here.

If Mike (3rd gen) said they are NOS - they are NOS.

I asked about the NOS as many repop pipes are super poor quality.
That front pipe has a tight fit against the frame in one or two places typically.
That's why on nearly every car I have restored, the frame has been hacked out in or two places.

Looks like the red muffler might be the issue. It does not have the offset like an original type.

One thing I enjoyed looking at the underneath of this 84 year old car while struggling with the exhaust, I don't see any rust.

Any idea where you can find a stock style muffler, I looked at all the stores I know and had no luck. Mac's has discontinued them. Maybe that's why I have a straight one from the previous owner. What I have is not the best set up would like to improve it.

I don't know if the '46 chassis/exhaust is close to the same clearances as a '35, but the pictures look similar. I went on the Walker Exhaust site, and chose P/N:17804 for my car. I had to use an ID to OD adapter for the inlet, but it fit perfectly and aligned well. Look at the Rock Auto site, and it will give you all the specs. Just a tip. The previous muffler rusted out from the inside, as it had no drain holes for condensation. I drilled a 1/8" hole just behind both end cap crimps, at the lowest point, to allow drainage.

I just installed one of their systems on my 39 and it fit reasonably well. I did have to tweak it to clear front crossmember. It's important to have the correct hanger by the muffler and I am not too happy with the one I made. Waldrons just has universal hangers which I didn't get although I have the correct hanger for the tailpipe which helped.when I tried to reinstall the right engine pan I found this has to be slid over the pipe before joining them. Now I know why many of these pans are cut or missing.

I put a Waldron's dual exhaust system on my 40 coupe and it took some very minor tweeks but it was pretty easy as I have a friend with an exhaust tubing machine.

There is a hole in the bottom frame rail to accommodate a rear muffler hanger/bracket on my 1938. Does the bracket with the rubber insulator mount on the bottom or top of the lower frame rail?

The crush bends in the pipes are what we have come to expect today. Curious,...does anyone make exhaust pipes today without crush bends, like the original?

I just installed a Waldrons system on my 46 Mercury and it fit pretty well. The crossover pipe was wrong… flange for the manifold was off slightly in two directions. Bought a NOS pipe and it fit up great. The tailpipe was too long by about 3-4 inches, and that was an easy fix. Overall, I was good with their quality and service. You’ll have an option of paying an extra $75 for oversized freight if they don’t cut the tailpipe into two pieces.

No one offers mandrel bent pipes (kinkless) these days. If you want them, it is custom work.
