Replacing steering box.

I have to replace the steering box on my 30 coupe. I've done the adjustments, and the rest of the steering system seems good. Smith and Jones has a rebuilt steering column and 2 tooth box that is ready to install. Has anyone used this? Am thinking of the F100 also. Thanks, David

Re: Replacing steering box.

Usually it's the worn sector gear and sector bushings that cause a lot of steering play. If replacing the worm gear, which some suggest along with the sector, a press (or machine shop) is needed for that. The rest of the components ( not all of which may need replacement) can usually be installed fairly easily and at less cost. The stock box can usually be adjusted to almost zero center play and equal lash at both extremes with some patience. I'd check to see what the vendor is including in the rebuild for $450.
Also, some folks don't suggest the needle bearings for the sector shaft as long as the stock style bushings are replaced properly and a lube fitting is provided in the housing for them.
