Preferred way to get to pressure plate I am getting a weird noise occasionally going through the shift pattern as I double clutch. It makes a sound like you hear when when a tight spring unwinds. Doesn't do it every shift but as time goes on seems to be getting more prevalent. Completely replaced the entire drive train including transmission gears, pressure plate, throw out bearing, etc. a couple of years ago. Only been driven about 500 miles since then. Now I am full time in FL so getting more use. In chatting with some local Model A friends it is sounds like I have a bad pressure plate. Now my question: is it easier to do the rear end removal or engine removal to get to the plate. Any suggestions very much appreciated. Jim

Re: Preferred way to get to pressure plate A simple first step would be to pull the clutch housing cover and try to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Might be the throwout bearing return spring just needs some lube on the connection points. If a full disassenbly is necessary, I think most would drop the rear axle and then pull the trans/housing assembly. Recommend you have a corn-fed youngster handy when you drop the unit. Let us know how it goes.

Re: Preferred way to get to pressure plate rear end for sure

Re: Preferred way to get to pressure plate I agree with Mulletwagon

Re: Preferred way to get to pressure plate I would pull the rear end vs the engine any day.
But definitely do as mullet suggests first. |
Re: Preferred way to get to pressure plate Thanks guys. Will do the check and report back what I find.

Re: Preferred way to get to pressure plate When our clutch disc broke at the Marquette meet, Alice and I had the engine out at the repair tent in about 2 hours.
Total down time was less than 24 hours. I've done both and would rather pull the engine any day. j.m.h.o. |
Re: Preferred way to get to pressure plate A lot better and safer to take the engine out, you don't have to have the car
off the ground and chance of falling off the jack stands . you don't have to then be under the car and drop the trans out and have to put it back in. A lot of extra work on the old body. Dennis |
Re: Preferred way to get to pressure plate MMMM Are you sure you don't have a speedo cable beginning to fail? Had that happen to me and it was in fact the cable.

Re: Preferred way to get to pressure plate Yesterday I put two pumps of grease in the throw out bearing and went for a ride. It is MUCH better but I still got a couple of the "spring sounds". I didn't want to put too much grease in but in thinking about it this is probably where too much is better than two little. Thanks sooo much for all the input and any other suggest are greatly appreciated. I do NOT look forward to a motor removal but will if I have to. Thanks again!!
