316 is your best bet for not rusting. All welds need polishing back or they will rust.

Chet,

I just installed some 316 stainless steel tubes, cables and turnbuckles for a deck railing. The manufacturer says that it can rust if not properly cared for or installed correctly. The instructions say to use chrome molly or stainless wrenches because iron specs left behind through the use of a standard crecent or open end wrench will cause the stainless to rust where the iron particles are left behind on the stainless. The instructions say that if stainless is in the open in a shop where grinding or other metal cutting activities occur which cause iron dust to get in the air and then settle on the stainless, it will rust. The instructions also say to clean it thoroughly with a citrus cleaning solution or car wash solution and flush with copious amounts of water to remove the iron dust. -Mike34

In order for Stainless not to rust, it needs to have just about 18% Chromium in the mix. Thank you "History Channel"...:D

It also needs about 8% Nickel to make it austenitic, making it non-magnetic and "rustless"...Bob L
