T-5 in a 54 or 55 F100

Going to look at one next weekend and if its worth saving it will be coming home with me,it has a six and I have a 55 car 272 that needs a home so if I get it the 272 will be going in. The local junkyard has everything to put the car engine in it but since it could be my daily driver it will need overdrive,I have a pre 65 car T-5 adapter so I need to know if the truck trans has the same bolt pattern as the cars and can use that adapter.

It's the same bolt pattern as a car if it has a 3 speed. The 4 speed is a truck type bolt pattern

Just to further my education, is the truck 3 speed bell and the car 3 speed bell the same depth? I know the truck has the mounts on it, and the 4 speed granny was different.

No, the depth between the truck and car bellhousings are different. I believe the truck is deeper.

.

Lots to learn about T5s, guys. And accurate info is also hard to come by. I offer the following, and will help answer other questions as I can.

Whoa guys! The length of the input shaft on a T5 depends on which T5 gearset that you use. And you must remember that you don't necessarily just swap an input shaft to change the length, because you need to match the tooth pitch and tooth count with the original shaft. That's why (in MOST cases) you must change the entire gearset.

I BELIEVE that all Ford input shafts are of the 10-spline variety and that all are either 7.18", 7.41" or 7.85" long (as measured from the front face of main case). Suffice it to say that all of the FORD 2.95 gear sets seem to have the 7.18" input length. Those all seem to have a 0.668" pilot diameter. The Camaro V8 or "close-ratio" GM transmissions with the 2.95 1st gear ALL have a 26-spline input shaft which I believe protrudes 6.69" from the front face of the main case. BEWARE that the '93 "S-10" T5 also sports a 26-spline input shaft that protrudes 7.3" from the front face of the main case. The 'wimpy' (non-close-ratio) GM transmissions all have a 14-spline input. Note that I don't have a problem with using a NWC (Non World Class) trans behind a flathead or a mild Chevy engine as the only real differences between WC and NWC is bearing type used to support the cluster gear, as well as the materials used in the synchronizer rings.

So, as far as input shafts go, the Ford T5s all have the 10-spline identifier. They are all too long to use the cast bellhousing type adapters. Most of those that I've seen seem to use a thick, drilled adapter plate which does NOT have the provision of the old Ford-like clutch cross shaft set-up like the bellhousing types come with.

As can be seen, I've concentrated on the 2.95 close-ratio transmissions. MOST of the others are too weak (torque rating) to consider using for anything but driving to the grocery store. I hope I've answered most of your questions.

There are ONLY TWO bolt patterns to contend with on T5s. The one in the middle in the picture BELOW is GM pattern like a Muncie. The two on either side are the late Ford Pattern.

Have you looked at Modern Driveline they have a lot of good info and adapters for the y-block for the 5 speed.

Paul and V8, thanks for filling in those blanks. I remember when Mummert used to show a modified truck bell on his site, but last I looked it wasn’t there. I should remember this because it’s what in my roadster (between the F code clone) and the TKO500. But memorable doesn’t seem to do what it used to.
