Visor mounting question....

The machine screws that thread into the nuts inside the windshield pillars of my '31 coupe were broken off LONG ago and someone tack welded the visor to the pillars as a band aid. I want to correct that, but I'm debating on how to approach this. My plan is to use a cutoff wheel to open up each pillar (as little as possible) and remove each ruined nut, then install a new nut and tig weld the cutout back in. Anyone have any thoughts on this? The nuts are completely toast so I don't see any way of using an e-z-out or other method to save them. Anyone know what it looks like inside the pillar?

Am I the only sucker that's had to fix this problem?

Can you drill out the broken screw to a larger size and use a insert nut, aka as a "Riv-nut"? The riv-nuts come in various sizes.

I haven't had a problem in this exact area, but wouldn't a Dremel with a small bit or diamond stone work to bore through the old broken screw?

Re: Visor mounting question....

My car hasn't been painted yet so I'm OK there. I can try to use an EZ-out for the passenger side screw, but on the drivers side it looks like someone had tried to hit the screw with a hammer and bent the little tab that is tack welded inside the pillar back beyond reach. I used a cutoff wheel to cut a square out around the hole and found the problem. I'll weld a new nut to the backside of a new piece of steel that I cut to fill the square I removed and then weld it all back up. If the passenger side doesn't come out I can do the same on that side. Now I know what's inside the pillar and it shouldn't be too bad to replace....and it will be better than original when I'm done. Thanks everyone for the advice.

I had to do to mine what you did to your's. Only on mine someone had butchered the slug that the screw screw's into. I cut out a clean rectangle cut new mteal and tacked on a T nut to the inside then welded the assy on . Worked good. Some one trie to use a no. 12 sheet metal screw in it.
