Re: What kind of air cleaner setup is this? The 885 Holley was used on larger trucks but they had Lincoln type 337 engines. The engine looks to be set up for a truck more like the 8RT 239 cid. The oil pan and an 11-inch Long type clutch would confirm that to a certain degree but it may also be an industrial application. I've not seen any cars with that type set up. The Mercury 255 cid cars used the 885 and so did the Lincoln 337 but their air cleaners were different.

Re: What kind of air cleaner setup is this? It would be interesting to see what it says on the heads. I tried to blow up the picture as much as possible, but still couldn't make it out.

I thought perhaps also it was a marine engine, but it seems for sure it was set up for some heavy-duty industrial application. Some close ups.

Re: What kind of air cleaner setup is this? The water pumps are the Mercury car set up.

Re: What kind of air cleaner setup is this? With the long oil fill tube , I'm thinking military , either vehicle or stationary application, but it's got a clutch so guessing vehicle.

Re: What kind of air cleaner setup is this? My guess would be a piece of farm equipment, especially in your area. Like a big baler or combine.

Re: What kind of air cleaner setup is this? That is a Merc carb too, no?

Re: What kind of air cleaner setup is this? 1 Attachment(s)
I contacted the seller. He says the previous owner said the engine (254) came out of a 51 Mercury Monarch. I think he is correct as I found this pic. I would like to know more about that particular setup if anyone has more info.

Re: What kind of air cleaner setup is this? Suggest that it is not military, farm or commercial but a 1951 Canadian Monarch air cleaner.
The one below is the 1949 version. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictu...ictureid=41943 https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/pictu...ictureid=41944 |

Here is a pic of the head marking.

Re: What kind of air cleaner setup is this? Seems obvious that it's a Canadian Mercury engine out of a '51 Canadian Monarch.

Yes, we seem to have established that, but what is all the "extra" stuff attached below the air cleaner? Here is a pic of a 51 Meteor, and doesn't look anything like the one for the Monarch. Can't find anything specific for the Canadian version on the net.

The stuff attached below the air cleaner is not "extra" but part of the system. The cylinder in the rear is a chamber meant to silence unwanted intake noises. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attac...0&d=1567987159 https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attac...9&d=1567987054 |
Re: What kind of air cleaner setup is this? The Monarch line was a larger car to be sold at Ford dealerships. The Meteor line was a smaller car to be sold at Mercury dealerships. For some reason Canada would not allow a Ford dealer to sell anything other than Ford and same with Lincoln Mercury. Many smaller communities especially in the western regions, had only one dealership in town and it was either a Ford dealer or a Mercury dealer. This spawned the Mercury pickups & trucks as well as the Monarch and Meteor car lines.
Ford of Canada had a lot of stuff that was different from the US. Maybe some Canadian vehicle had a small air cleaner like that. Pump motors and other industrial applications could have had a clutch but that one looks like a Long type. I don't know what type clutch the Canadian Mercury or Monarch would have had. I'll have to get a copy of the Canadian parts book one of these days. |
