Hand control Model A

I saw a few photos of FDR behind the wheel of his Model A. Kind of wondering how they made the clutch hand controlled and how they shifted.... One hand on stick, one hand on hand controlled clutch ??? No hands on wheel?

Maybe they had dual controls (clutch, brake and gas) pedals for the passenger like the Diver's Ed. cars had. I think it was more of a photo op. than an actual opportunity for FDR to drive the car. They always tried to minimize his disability.

I had a friend, a polio victim now deceased, who had a hand controlled 1928 Phaeton. The key to his hand controls was the clutch was vacuum operated which simplified operating it by hand.

Hope that worked better than vacuum wipers!
