42-48 Pass Steering gear oil retainer
 

On the lower steering gear oil retainer/vent tube plate on the steering gear.
Mine leaks out the tube seal at the center of the plate
Has anyone repaired or resealed one?

Is still on car and I considered removing it but am looking for suggestions.

Answered under Late V8s, but will repeat here. Common issue, remove plate and solder center tube to the plate.

You will want to remove the steering box from the cat to do the repair. Here is a thread showing the fix, there are others out there as well. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, pretty sure the steering boxes are the same 37-48.

Will, why would you need to remove the steering box to repair the end plate? Why not just remove the end plate?

Got a NOS one from Fred at SSO for reasonable money. Easy swap. The you can silver solder the leaky one for a spare.

Thank you everyone for confirming the fix I had in mind. That was to remove the end cover and solder the tube around the plate mount surface on the inside.

Now that you got me thinking about it, you don't need to remove the box. I've read and been told when removing a shim to adjust the pre load to be very careful not to pull the end plate away to far, as to not displace the bearings. In reality, even if fully removing the end plate, the top bearing is held in place by the shaft and the lower bearing can come off and go back on with the end plate.
