'40 brake shoes

Got a question: My '40 2 door needs rear brakes. Will the later shoes ('42-'48) work on a '40? They are the same except the later shoes have an oval-shaped hole at the anchor end instead of a round hole. Does this make a difference? Thanks! Allan

'42 was the cutoff date for your particular brake shoes.

Again, the early design with adjustable shoe anchors are 39-42 and the
later design with self-centering shoes are 46-48. The part number prefixes for the later design are 51-A indicating 1945 start for 1946 models.

And the answer to the question is: For a 1940, must use a #38 shoe which has a ROUND hole in the bottom that the round eccentric cam fits into. The oblong hole in the later #37 shoe allows the flat-sided cam to move up-down to automatically center the shoe in the drum when the brakes are applied.

If you can not get exchange shoes or get yours re-lined, I do know you can get the correct shoes from Richard at the Early V-8 Garage, (626) 338-2282.
