Proper U joint housing? Since I have my engine and transmission all out, I want to deal with the transmission mount. The PO put a float a motor mount in, but I have heard of clutch chatter issues with them and it isn't right. So I want to get rid of it.
My car is a 28 Roadster, so I know the u joint housing I have is not correct. It has no lugs. My car was pieced together, so it is possible that the frame is a later frame. What distinguishes the early and late frames in this area? Also, which u joint housing will I need? |
Re: Proper U joint housing? Here you go Chris...
Frame study: http://plucks329s.org/pdf/frame/Evol..._Assembly2.pdf U-Joint Study: http://plucks329s.org/pdf/studies/uj...y_restorer.pdf I think these will help you figure it out. Pluck |
Re: Proper U joint housing? It looks like I need the one shown in figure 8. I have no multidisk transmission or early braking system.

Re: Proper U joint housing? You may want to lift the body as high as is practicable and see if you can verify the frame number. This would be important if you are serious about authenticity. I always find out what it is due to the ease of parts mixing from different model years.
Some of those U-joint housings would end up cracked. Henry Ford loved making forgings but that didn't last through all of the model A production. A lot of parts that started out as forgings ended up being castings or stamped steel pressings. In any case, you may need the matching bearing retainer for the clam shells you need for authenticity. |

Re: Proper U joint housing? I am removing it because I don't like the FAM mounts and I am still having clutch problems after rebuilding the bell housing.
I don't know If I want to check the frame number considering I might not even see anything there. |
Re: Proper U joint housing? Installed correctly the Ford box engine mounts are flexible.Float a motor style mounts are the standard of the industry today, used in all types of applications. The rear float a motor mount installed correctly dampens shock load at the rear of the transmission,Ford relied on the box type mount to accomplish this. A lot of folks feel the box type mount is superior, and others the FAM..my bet is your clutch chatter lies in a different area than mounts.

Re: Proper U joint housing? Good Morning all...We have driven our 31 Tudor for 15 years with FAM mounts and never a problem...no chatter at all...Something else is unhappy...Ernie in Arizona
