Dropped axle
 

Some time back I recall reading about a FordBarn member who was able to take a stock axle and make into a 4" drop axle. Any Member recall this article ?

There are several that offer this service. Okie Joe, Koehler’s kustom, Jack&Dueces in Virginia. I personally have not used any of these guy’s but they all have great reputations. Good luck & keep us informed of you choice & outcome. Thanks

I used Nostalgia Sid in Oklahoma. He has a Facebook page. Did great job in dropping a '40 axle and he can also drop the stock steering arms on your spindles.

I've had some experience with several droppers, One said no problem to bend the steering arms to clear the tie rod under my 32 wishbones with a 4inch dropped deuce axle. When I got the spindles back the geometry was so screwed up they were unusable. A different vendor showed me a really nice deuce axle which I bought had to have shipped, when I got it there were deep shackle marks and was it slightly bent, definitely not the axle I bought. My best experiences have been with Greg Haynes/Anson axles, unfortunately he's taking some time off for health issues.

Okie Joe does Sid's early axles, Sid does the later ones.

Wasn't aware of that. I got the axle directly from Sid who came to the Turlock swap meet and I assumed he did the job. Whoever did it did a good job.

I bought a nicely dropped 33-36 at Turlock a few years ago from Okie Joe , back when we had swap meets. Sid and Joe share the booth at Turlock. Both are nice guys and I am very pleased with the axle.

I've had two axles dropped by Ansen speed shop, very happy with both.

Having an original Ford axle dropped is the way to go. Somehow I just don't have a lot of faith in those cheap dropped axles (cast) I see on e-Bay or other sites.

TJ; how much was your axle dropped? Its my understand-
ing that 2" is the max due to the wider wishbone. (With a
reversed eye spring, the 3" yield would be about perfect
for me.)

Had mine dropped 2". I don't think they drop it more than two as it stretches the axle too far. That with the reversed eye main leaf gets the car down just right. If you are using an old spring I would try it first without the reversed eye as the old spring may have some natural sag to it.

What else needs to be modified or fabricated when doing the 2 inch axle drop.

Will need dropped steering arms and probably a shortened tie rod and draglink

I used Okie Joe and he will make look new. He fixed the whole thing and it was near perfect. If your near a swap meet he is going to you drop off are pickup. Very nice person.

So he can take care of everything, including the dropped steering arms, shortened tie rod and drag link. Any idea on a ballpark price to perform this.

Dropping the axle is $200.

We can provide you with a dropped axle or we can drop your axle. Retail price to drop an axle is $200. Core charge for Model A is $50.00 and for 33-36 axles is $75. Core charge for a 32 Heavy is market value, presently around $400.00 (when available).

All axles are straightened if necessary, kingpin bores are resized if needed, and all axles are Magnafluxed before shipping. We also can fill the ends of the axle for $100 and drill the center for $100. You have a choice of stretch drop or conventional drop. The difference is stretch drop maintains the original width within 1/8 of an inch, while a conventional drop shortens the axle approximately 3/4 of an inch per side. We can also drop 37-41 Ford axles, if needed.

Thank you but, I already found that info on their web site. No mention of the steering arms, tie rod and drag link shortening. Thought maybe someone on Ford Barn might have had these services performed and could cast information on as to total cost involved.

Think your best bet would be to call them and ask what services they provide and the cost of each. Sid's is another option as to services (Joe and Sid work together as far a axles go).
