1947 Super Deluxe ignition Switch Trying to diagnose an intermittent non start. Definitely a spark issue. I think the ignition switch may be bad. Removed it and having trouble opening it as I wanted to clean inside connections. Would replace it but all I find available is outer body with terminals. Anywhere I can get whole switch??

Re: 1947 Super Deluxe ignition Switch Check eBay, e.g., https://www.ebay.com/itm/17271948615...sAAOSwo0JWOqKB

Re: 1947 Super Deluxe ignition Switch You are correct, Lawson.

Re: 1947 Super Deluxe ignition Switch Yes Lawson. I’m not looking for the key/cylinder. Square switch connects to toggle.

Re: 1947 Super Deluxe ignition Switch I removed mine from our my '41. removed the 2 screw that held it in, drilled out crimps, cleaned all contacts, taped it together at the flanges where screws pass thru with painters tape (just enough to hold it together, started the screws , pulled the tape off and finished tightening the screws. If the stationary contact is worn badly you usually can find them thru Ebay or vintage Ford parts dealers

Re: 1947 Super Deluxe ignition Switch Thank you. Wasn’t obvious how to open it. I’ll drill out the mounting holes and open up and clean. Apparently you can’t get the whole unit anywhere.

Not difficult to find.Southside Obsolete in MN and ThirdGen Auto in TN should have NOS. |
Re: 1947 Super Deluxe ignition Switch 3 Attachment(s)
I did the same as fordor41, on my '46 Coupe, except I soldered the "ears" on the outer edges, just enough to hold the case together. Make sure the lever and switch are in the correct position to mate, when you bolt the switch back on, as the pin from the lever has to mate into the hole in the back of the switch. Otherwise, the switch could get damaged.

Re: 1947 Super Deluxe ignition Switch The lever type ignition switch in the '47 commonly wears a groove in the bakelite in the back of the switch preventing the dimples in the internal arm from making contact. The parts are available from C&G (800-266-0470) Part# 81A-3704. If you need to replace the wiper arm, 81A-3704/9K (kit). The lever type switch was phased out in early '47. It had been a Ford item since '32 in one form or another.

Re: 1947 Super Deluxe ignition Switch Opened the switch and cleaned all contacts. Re installed. Getting about 5.4 volts at coil with key on so apparently switch is functioning. Still no start. Seems like no spark. Resistance test on coil gives me 0.6 and 8400 ohms. Will have to get a helper to do spark test at plugs. Will very intermittently fire. Maybe points and condenser.

Re: 1947 Super Deluxe ignition Switch Well it seems I found the issue. Hi tension coil wire seems to have been spliced between coil and where it enters boot to connect to plug wires. I will replace it but wondering how the non coil end is removed from that rubber boot.
