Columbia tube routing beneath hood '36 Ford

Guys,
Any photos of how you plumbed the tubes beneath the hood of your '35 / '36 Ford?
I have all of the authentic controls. Just wondering how others have routed the lines.
Especially appreciative of any photos of what's considered
"concourse correct" - even though Columbia wasn't a Ford authorized accessory.

Thanks much!

Mike the photos are in the instructions for installation for 35-36. Do you have the installation diagram for the dash valve?
I will scan them and email them to you.

Kube….There MAY be some useable pics or data in this thread from 2015, especially PeterC's '35 coupe! Click the link! DD

I've got the instructions but they are of such poor quality, well, the photos are about worthless.
My biggest concern is the tube from the clutch valve to the valve on the dash panel.

Kube….Does this pic of Peter's firewall help any? I'd PM PeterC as he took hundreds of detail pictures as that coupe was being built, and he is certainly very friendly and quite accommodating! Tell him The Dick sent ya! Dick D (DD)

The copper pipe from the under the carb vacume adaptor go's back level with
the engine and back about 3/4's the length of head takes a gentle curve up to
the manual shift valve. The shift valve is mounted with about 1 1/2" space
above it with the overhang of the cowl. The cooper tubes that run back to the
shift cylinder on the rear run across the top of the firewall to the passenger side
and take a sharp downward curve to down where the body mounts to the frame.
And then over to the torque tube and back to the shift cylinder. The tubs are
held to the torque tube with band type clips. The clips are about 1" wide and go
around the the torque tube. The material is less then 16 gauge. I think there
are 3 of them. they are bent out on both ends with holes for 14"/20 nut, bolt and
lock washer. I have a 36 roadster, Bambalina Blue that was delivered to the dealer
with the rear installed. I am the third owner. If you get to Florida you can take
pictures and even drive it. G.M.

Thanks for the kind words DD ... but my plumbing install is by no means stock - was designed for simplicity, function and form. Vacuum source is from below the supercharger at the intake on the drivers side. I have a "vacuum manifold" that supplies Columbia, distributor and windshield wiper.

I want to thank all that responded... especially Terry... YOU sir, have made my life easier (again)!
I think I may be able to complete the installation today. That's the plan anyway :)

Although I'm not interested in modifying these old cars, I can and do appreciate well thought out and well executed modifications. Yours is one of a few that is worthy of high praise!

Kube: Any chance you can take pictures of your completed job and post them? It would be a big help for me finishing my installation correctly. Thanks Dave/Green Bay

Dave, I will, but be forewarned, I may take a bit of "artistic liberty" with the way the lines run within the engine compartment.
With Terry's help (previous posts) I've managed to finally figure out the proper routing. Still, in my opinion, the hose that is routed from the clutch valve to the dash panel (selector) valve looks "hokey" as Columbia instructed. I may, I just may, change that.

My roadster was a very high point car back in the 1970's. That was 7000 miles ago. I am fighting the urge to restore this car as I have done all my others.

Good day guys!
Well, the Columbia installation is completed and shifts beautifully - smooth.
I'm happy!
Thanks again for your help.
I did end up replicating the Columbia suggested routing of the lines.

Re: Columbia tube routing beneath hood '36 Ford

I found an old chart from Columbia that shows gear ratios in and out of OD as well as engine rpm.
Final drive ratio (through transmission - standard drive / over drive) in:
3rd gear 4:11 / 2:97
2nd gear 6:59 / 4:75
1st gear 11:59 / 8:37

From this chart, I'd almost think I could simply leave it in OD.

Should be turning around 2105 rpms at 55MPH. My tires are about 2" larger in diameter than stock (6:50 x 16) so my numbers are off a bit. But still, 2100 at 55? Hardly working.

Quite frankly, you're probably right on that theory. The FINAL 1st gear ratio in my '65 Vette with 2.20 1st gear and 3.55 rear is 7.81 (actually a tad stiffer than your 8.37) and it leaves a stop light perfectly fine without any fuss. DD

Mike, the few columbia's Ive installed were all cars with 4.11 gears and stock 85hp engines. They sure drive so much better with a columbia.. Your roadster sure looks nice!

I have a 34 but I used the 35-36 brackets to mount the plumbing.
