91-99 ford carb

An acquaintance from Conn. tells me that the 91-99 Carb. with Ford logo on the passenger side of the float bowel and 91-99 the other bowel side is not proper for 1939 ford. Is this correct?

I think so. Lots of details connected with this question. Generically , and for a Sunday afternoon local car show no sweat. No logo or a Chandler Groves logo somehow factor
into the super technical correct answer. Paging Mike Kubarth.

Click the link below for a lively thread on just this subject about five years ago. Lots of rhetoric, supposition, BS, full-blown painted carb restoration reference, and even a blurb about JM35's inability to keep a shirt professionally presentable for a whole day. DD

I believe the carb with 91-99 on one side and the Ford logo on the other side is in fact correct. The Chandler Groves model was replaced after 1938 models.

91-99 carb was used on 39 Mercury as well.

Chandler was no longer supplying carbs to Ford for the '39 production. The carburetor that replaced the Chandler for 1939 has the Ford script on one side of the bowl. On the other side it has "MODEL 91-99".
There are the numerals "94" cast on the carburetor as well.
There will be either an "F" or an "H" on the accelerator pump housing depending on where the carb. came from. "F" is obviously "home built" by Ford. "H" is a carb. supplied to Ford by Holley.
There was an elongated external vent in the upper cover at the accelerator pump housing.

The above is in regard to the 85 and 95HP engines only.

I hope this helps clear up many of the myths surrounding correctness in 1939.

I always thought the 91-99 carbs were used in '39, '40 and '41, with '39 being the first year of the 94 type carb.

Re: 91-99 ford carb

Nobody (yet) has commented that the numbers "91-99" also relate to the PREFIX designator of a FORD PART first used in 1939 ("91"), and a MERCURY PART first used in 1939 ("99")......hence, "91-99"! Just sayin'.......! DD

The 91/99 was used until 1942 when the 21-29 carb was introduced.

Same deal.......21 is the prefix for 1942 FORD (first-issue date) parts, as 29 is the prefix for 1942 MERCURY (first-issue date) parts. DD

According to my ford parts manual, the 91-99 is correct. Also, the '39 ford I have had stored since the late 60's has a 91-99 carb.

From the consensus of opinion here and the references I have searched, such as Green Bible and others, I feel sure the 91-99 carb. is proper for the 1939 ford. Frankly with all the evidence, I don't know what reason he had to claim my advertisement was not only wrong but dishonest. Thank you gentleman for your knowledge.

Soooooo......why don't ya ask him (if he believes Himself to be SO authoritative) just what is the correct application of a 91-99 if NOT for a 1939 Ford? DD

Keith, I can tell you the information I posted earlier was derived from research rather than hearsay, innuendo or simple "I seen it..".
You can take it to the proverbial bank that the carburetors I described were the only two that Ford installed on a '39 Ford.
