The Ace Mechanic stikes again
 

On the way to the Reno Bash a few years ago a friend stopped me at a turnout and asked if I was using my overdrive over the mountains. I told him I was and he asked me to slow down a bit as his BW wouldn't shift in overdrive. I did and we enjoyed the meet and I figured he would repair his car when he got home. Well the truth was he didn't really feel up to it and last year he passed away.

Now his son has asked my advice, he is east coast, I'm west. I'm not real good with electrical things and this seems to be on of those. He has a BW that is mounted normally in the torque tube. His is done perhaps better that mine in thet he has a "kick down" button to make the temporary down shift as when needing the extra power to pass. I find this a bit confusing, but do understand the rest of the system, I think. The hot wire to the solenoid is coming from his on/off swich on the dash to the governor then to the solenoid and is set up so it sends current to the solenoid once the car reaches 40/45 mph. Somewhere in that circuit is also a relay that appears to me controlled by a lever and chain that are activated when the manual shift is operated. My OD has no relay or lever other than the in/out cable that makes the manual shift,

When my car gets up to speed (40ish) I push the manual lever into OD and flick the electrical switch on. Nothing really changes until I get my foot off the gas momentarily and then it shifts into OD. His just free-wheels at that point.

With either car stopped, if one changes the electrical switch there will be a click and the sound of parts moving within the overdrive. On my car it is a real snap and thwack of parts seating, on his the click is milder and the parts sound is slower and sounds like they a dragging against their will, slightly. Could this be from a faulty Solenoid? Your thought are appreciated,

Good Morning...The problem also sounds as if the area where the gears are moving might well be full of old oil and or grease and need to be cleaned out and new lube put in...Ernie in Arizona

Does he have a 12V solenoid on a 6V vehicle?

No, 6V all the way. This is the most "Like" original Model A I ahave driven. Was restored in the 70's and shows very well now. He drove it to DC the morning after he finished the restoration and entered it in touring class in Colorado, won a great mark with it and continued on to DC with two little kids and a wife. (He had started from his home in Livermore, CA where he was a Tool and Die maker for the Livermore Nat. Lab.) Wish it were my car, it is a beauty.

I have a badly pulled hamstring and at 85 it is holding me up in getting this done. Perhaps tomorrow I will be able to get under the car. Today that is out of the cards,

Shouldn't be too hard to find an old 6 volt Studebaker solenoid, as most Studes had overdrive. LL MY Studebakers and parts got burned up, or I'd give you one for nothing.
