Rust Stains on Stainless Steel

My 1931 headlight and tail light buckets have heavy rust stains where the non-stainless steel fasteners were located. I tried some mild rubbing compound which has had little effect on the stains.

I may try to soak them in one of the chelating solutions such as Evaporust or WD-40 Rust Remover, but am curious what these effect these products will have on the stainless steel. I do know that they will slightly darken regular steel. Any thoughts or experience with this? Thanks.

Try Coke and aluminum foil.

I spray with WD-40 and scrub with a tooth brush. I’ve had great results Wayne

Barkeepers Friend, available in grocery stores, removes rust. Then polish with any of the metal polishes. I have had good luck with SIMICHROME POLISH, part number M-6067 at Snyders. https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/

If the rust is really deep you may have to use a buffing wheel.

Best polish I’ve found is Wenol.
But some of the above ideas of getting rid of bad stains might be in order first

I burnished my rusty bumpers and instrument panel with water-wetted aluminum foil. A little elbow grease and follow up waxing and you'll be amazed.

In the laundry section of your grocery store you will find Whink Rust Remover. Will completely remove the rust stains, just about like magic. https://www.amazon.com/Whink-Product...91099188&psc=1

You might try a product called "Iron Mike or Iron Ike, Or Iron Out" or a few other names. It is a Sodium Bisulphate (?) cleaner, IIRC. Good for sinks, tubs and drains where Iron is a problem. It's good for "Tramp Iron" on Stainless steel too. Never, ever use laundry bleach on iron stains. The products mentioned arr available in supermarkets, plumbing supplies, and hardware, and Big box stores.
