alternator I bought a model A the fellow said he had just put a new 6V alternator on. I got it home noticed it wasn't charging Checking it has a 12V battery neg ground. How much trouble am I in? What alternator do I need to get that will fit the A? Thanks in advance.

Re: alternator Have you had trouble with the battery discharging.

Re: alternator Yes.

Re: alternator Have you checked the output of the alternator with a multimeter. If so what did you get for output. If the output is good you may just have a bad battery not taking a charge. If your not getting any output then maybe you have a bad diode or some other trouble in the alternator. I will let others recommend and alternator as I don't use them.

Re: alternator I just noticed that you have a 6 volt alternator and a 12 volt battery. That won't work.
Go all 6 volt or 12 volt. I would check the output of the 6 volt alternator and if it is good just put in a 6 volt battery. |

Re: alternator I don't understand your question. The car has a 6V alternator, and a 12V battery the neg. post is grounded to the car.

Re: alternator I don'T want to change the 12V battery with a 6V. if I did that I would have to redo the head light's they are sealed beam. I would rather change the alternators. I need to know what 12V alternator single wire neg ground to buy that will fit the car.

Re: alternator All Model A parts dealers offer 12v alternators that are bolt on. Just an example:

Re: alternator Wagner Products: reliable and good pricing, 6v and 12v.

Yes tom Wagner has without question the best alternator and bracket out there. Tom is part of our st Louis Model A club and is not only a great knowledgeable guy on auto electrics but has the best alternator. I use them in customers cars all the time. The other brands don’t hold a candle. Look up Wagner products on line or he advertises in the Model A News and Restorer . Larry shepard |
Re: alternator The 6 volt pos or neg ground alternator is a conversion of the original Delco 10Si 12V negative ground, which are common as nails these days and can be had pretty cheap. Even the Asian knockoffs work well; the tech isn't rocket science any more. They were used on most Chevy models, many small Fords, AMC Jeeps, and others back in the day. You should be able to do a direct swap. You could then sell the 6V and make a few $$.

Re: alternator We still don't know the output even after being asked.
Why would someone stick a 6v on a 12v vehicle. Maybe its missed marked. |
