Camera Recommendations for Recording Model A Suspension
 

Can anyone recommend a camera for recording the performance of a Model A suspension? I'd like to record something like this, as well as the wheels to see if there is any noticeable wobble.

There a bunches of cameras available. I'm looking for one that someone has actually used on a Model A. A lot of the cameras appear to be plastic. How did you attach it to the car without the bumps in the road jarring the camera off the car?

While Go Pro may not be the only mountable camera systems out there, they are the most common . I've seen them mounted to helicopters and airplanes and they hang in there pretty well. Resolution is good but I don't know what type of lens they have. Fish eye types tend to make the photo area too far away from the subject at hand and distort the frame but they have their place for some applications.

A fellow named Jack Bahm did a video in 2012 of a Driving A over Bumps with a camera mounted under chassis. Shows the radius ball and other parts in motion.

Yup. That is the video link that I posted, but he only briefly mentioned is camera. I think it was a Flip camera. That's eight years ago; so, I'm thinking that there might be a better camera on the market now. (That's a great video, by the way.)

The GoPro posts above sound interesting.

Can anyone else relate their filming experiences with a Model A?

One suggestion about cameras is the microphone.

If the camera will be anywhere outside the car personally it makes a much more enjoyable video if the microphone is NOT located in the slipstream.

Listening to the buffeting of the wind noise across the microphone is most irritating.

So, you’re saying that a camera that accepts a remote microphone would be more useful? Good tip. I hadn’t thought about that.

A go pro would do a great job and there would be no sound, but they are very expensive and it would have to be mounted so it could not fall off. When I did this, I used an old magnetic base from an antenna. 1/4-20 threads. It fell off once, but it was in the street by my house and I was lucky enough not to run over it. The little Flip has been out of production for many years. I get mine from EBay for $12 to $25. They are all used and if I break one, no big loss.
You should make a video with a go pro if you can. I bet it would turn out great. Good luck. jack

I use a GoPro Black HERO 3+ (I think the new ones are GoPro 12's). I bought it off e-bay and it came with a ton of extras, all for under $100. It has sound and I tape the microphone to the lower part of the trunk, to avoid wind noise. I cover the mic with a "dead cat" (not a real one) to suppress the wind noise further. Made the stand out of Harbor Freight suction cups and pvc piping.
