1936 Ford Pickup - New Engine and transmission

Hey all,

I have a 1936 ford pickup truck that I'm restoring. I have a new chassis set up for a small block Chevy engine and I plan on buying a crate motor and transmission package. Right now I'm looking at ohiospeedshop.com and paceperformance.com Does anyone have any other recommendations for site to look at?
The options I'm left with buying are a Fuel injected LS3 or a carbureted 350, possibly with 3 dual barrels (typically have tall manifolds, not sure if it will fit yet)
Obviously Price is persuading me to go with a carbureted engine as well.

The transmission choices are a Tremec T56 6 speed or a TKO 600 5 speed.

Please let me know any information or knowledge/experience you have had with any of this, it would be greatly appreciated

If you put that crap in it you ain't restoring it, you're bastardizing it.

Re: 1936 Ford Pickup - New Engine and transmission

Though this site is primarily for old Fords with flatheads, plenty of guys on this site also have Streetrods with modern engines in them. With that said, the best place to ask these questions would be on the HAMB (which is more of a hotrodder's site).

Back to your question: There are many places to buy engine packages from - too many to even list. You might also consider JEGs and Summit Racing - they have a lot of different packages. In the end, you can't compare TWO different engines unless you know ALL the components inside of them, who manufactured them, etc.. Also, what type of rebuild was actually done? Has the engine been balanced, blue printed, testing on a dyno or what?

It will usually come down to what price/performance level and quality/brand of components you can afford (assuming you know what you're looking at). For example, you can buy a 383 SBC stroker Chevy from a price range of a couple thousand, up to probably 8 thousand . . . and while they are the same basic cubic inches, completely different engine packages. Are you looking for 350 - 400 HP on the cheap . . . or are you looking for 525 HP, with a hydraulic roller cam, AFR heads, MSD ignition, Edelbrock manifold, etc - with all the best quality components? The prices will be VERY different - depending on how you answer this.

Also, consider everything ELSE that you need to purchase to actually have a running engine/transmission combination that you can drive. It is easy to overlook things like ignitions, valve covers, starters, air cleaners, alternators, oil pans, flywheels, clutches, bell housings, shifters, etc . . . you get the point.

Lastly - what type of warranty do they provide and what are the "terms" of it? If you have to pay to crate and ship the engine back - it gets really expensive. Checkout all the reviews/testimonials from the folks that bought before you --- what can you tell about quality, performance, service, etc..

Enough out of me . . .

If you're planning on that much power, I hope you've put at least an equal amount of thought into suspension, steering, and brakes.

I suggest you look at https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...ssage-board.5/, that site specializes in the question you have.

The H.A.M.B. is NOT a "catch-all" for the rest of the stuff that some folks consider as verboten here on the 'Barn. The H.A.M.B. SPECIALIZES in pre-1964 traditional "hot rods"......NOT "street rods", nor latter day computerized fuel injection, and no independent front suspension hack-jobs, either! DD

Clearly the “36” needs saved so what parts are left? If so you can get a Tbucket kit for 1/4 of the value and be just as happy with it.

There is no doubt that you are building a street rod. Best bet is to visit a few street rod sites.

Do you have any idea what the difference is between a T56 and TKO 600? Do you know just how big a T56 really is? They're YUGE! Why would you think you want a T56? Which T56.....there are TWO basic transmissions...a Close-ratio with a 2.66 1st gear, and a wide ratio w/a 2.97 1st gear. T56s have TWO overdrive gears....the TKO 600 is a 5-speed (ONE OD gear). Sounds like you might just be throwing-around some numbers you heard 2nd-hand from your mailman's brother-in-law. You've hinted that money is a prime consideration. Do you know that a measly TKO starts at about $2,600-ish retail? T56s start at WAY north of $3 Grand. Nothing wrong with dreaming, but not knowing about the real world can become very expensive....quickly! DD

Be sure to recycle your original chassis to someone who is restoring a vehicle. Thank you street rodders for a source for replacement stock chassis and other suspension parts.

bpaupst here is my suggestion, this is a great site for any questions on the original parts of your pickup. The HAMB is also a good place for Traditional Hot Rod questions. Once you get into the Street Rod area, there are site that are a much better match. I love original restorations, traditional Hot Rods, some Street Rods & 5.0 mustangs and about any year Ford engine! But the Barn is centered around flathead era vehicles with flathead engines (or other original engines in these time period) and some traditional Hot Rodding of flatheads.

Re: 1936 Ford Pickup - New Engine and transmission

Thanks for the feedback, especially those who helped. Just to be clear, i Have two 1936 Ford Pickups, One is original and one is incomplete and will be a resto mod. it has an entire new rolling chassis. That is the one I am looking for parts for. I too, prefer not to "bastardize" original's. The other is just some pieces of the body I have. I will take my questions elsewhere.

Thanks again

Again, depends on the question! :)
