Diamond Back Bias Ply looking radials
 

Looking for feedback on Diamond Back radial tires with the Bias Ply look.
I want to mount them on stock 1940 wheels.
What do I need to know?

I looked at them, but at the time they weren’t available so I went with the Cokers. It is a really big difference in ride and handling !

I have them on both my 40s, stock wheels. No problems. Makes the cars drive really nice. The pictures in my 40 woodie album were when I had the bias ply tires on for Concourse judging. No longer need to be point judged so I switched to radials. Put blackwalls on the 40 business coupe from the beginning.

I like 'em. Much better than bias but we knew that.

Pricey. But once bought, satisfying.

Went on my 35 wires, but I struggled.

They are packed (in a wrapper) to pull the beads together (and protect during shipping), but they had put the tire so it didn't wanna seat the bead (while inflating through the stem). I recommend unwrapping & let them relax. Or prop them open to relax them somehow (maybe some small wood sticks?).

Put them out flat in the sun to make them flexible. Heat both sides, lube the bead and they'll be a lot easier to mount. I do this all the time for motorcycle tires and the same when I've mounted car tires.

Put a tube in them and partially inflate it to help spread the walls out.

I have them on my 46 Cadillac . I liked them so much I have a set coming as we speak for the 41 pickup to replace the brand new Cokers it came with when I bought it.

The avatar picture here shows DiamondBack Auburns on a ‘40. Very happy with the tires. Have had no problems. Not happy with how much I had to spend to get them.

I bought the radial tubes because didn’t trust that the rim on my original wheels would provide a clean air-tight seal.

What tire size did you go with?
600-16 or 650-16
Also whitewall width and did you get the beauty bar?

These are standard size, 600-16.
3" whitewall
What's a beauty bar? Is that a raised band on the sidewall above the whitewall? Didn't order that. Don't recall that option available when I bought in 2017.

That is the raised band about 5/8 wide above the whitewall.
My current byas ply tires from Coker that are Ford script has them.
Coker no longer makes Ford script tires.
I am going with the Diamond Backs that are 650-16 which was an option with the 3" plus 5/8 beauty bar whitewalls plus radial tubes as you sugested.
Attcched is my current tire with Ford script and beauty bar. Ford script is faint but on bottom right.

Folks just mounted new diamond back Auburns as noted difficulty mounting narrow beads to inflate. The following word very well and almost no cost. purchase a 16”bicycle inner tube at Walmart $6 bucks. After tire mounted on rim. Tire lube stuf very liberally. Stuff The 16” bike tire in the top of the rim lip. Keep slippery inflate the bike tube jut till it fills the gap. Inflate the tire valve out the side. Inflate the tire which is now holding air as it is being filled. Thbike innertube will squeeze out of the wheel. Don’t be shy after bead comes up pull out the bike tube whil filling the tire fully. Works great. Use bike tube for your size rim. 16” etc Stuff into rim evenly keep it slippery you will figure it out good luck!!

Adding due to typos do not over inflate bike tube too much just enough to seal the gap valve core out of tire keep it very slippery with tire mounting lube it will pop out mostly as beads seat grab it and pull the bike tube out as you add air.

Just, and I mean Just, put Double White Walls with the beauty rings on my '36. Still have not washed the blue stuff off of the whitewalls on the spare, hope to do that this weekend.

Diamond Back makes tires to order, took 5 weeks to get them and the cost was around $2500, plus another $100 to have them spin balanced. I had to borrow the wide five to normal 5 reducer from a friend so they could spin balance them.

Will post pictures when I get it all put together.

Curious on the pricing . . . when I went to their website the prices seemed about $350 at the high end, how did your total get up to $2500?
