'30 Tudor Rear Seat Belt Center Anchor Ideas

Hello, I’m installing seat belts in the back seat of my ’30 Tudor. I’ve searched the forum but only found 1 thread that seemed applicable. I don’t fully understand the pictures in there.

It seems like they did more modifications than I would like but maybe it’s the only way.

I attached the outside belts to the body mounts. They aren’t in a perfect location since they are more under the seat than behind it but the metal is strong and I think it’s about as good as you can do with this car. I’ve read posts about the body detaching from the frame and thus you shouldn’t attach belts to the frame. But I figure if the body detaches from the frame we’re probably all be dead anyhow, or wish we were.

I can’t figure out a decent anchor point for the center seat belt straps for the rear seat of a Tudor. There is a square tube along the back edge of the body. Under the car it seems to be strong and there are 2 0.5” holes near the center with rivets above them that go to a curved piece of metal that goes up along the inside back of the body. I considered drilling out those rivets and replacing with bolts but the metal they rivet into is too narrow for 2 0.5” holes. There is a gap between that bent piece of metal in the car and the rear body. Would it be idiotic to put a ‘U’ bolt through that gap and attach the belts there? That bent piece is riveted ~6 locations and seems fairly robust but not great.

What have you all done to anchor the center rear seat belts in Tudors?

I followed Les Andrews method with good results. I have retractables for the front on our 30 Tudor. It's been a while but I think on the back I placed 3/16 steel two inches wide across the back at the body sub rail. It tucked in just under the sub rail. I used grade 8 bolts through the floor. Hope this makes sense.

Steve. PM sent to you.

On my '29 coupe I did something similar where I used thru-body holes on the sides to anchor a steel bar going all the way across behind the seat (above the body floor). Then I just attached the center buckles to the bar.

I used one of the bolts that mounts the spare tire bracket on the back of the car. I replaced the original bolt with a grade 8. Of course, if your spare is not on the back of the car, this would not be an option. Yours appears not to have the spare mount in the pictures. Basically, you want to engage a large area of the sheet metal for your mounts.

All the rear belts and the center front belt receiver rotate out of view. Only the front shoulder belts are exposed. The retractor is hidden behind the rear quarter panel and threads thru the space between the rear window and the trim molding to keep things really clean.

I used the spare tire mount bolt. I got one at the hardware store that was 1/4 or 1/2 inch longer to accommodate the extra spacing. I used a grade 8 bolt.

I’m interested in where you purchased your seatbelts as well.

I purchased from Seatbelt Planet in Oklahoma 405-225-0114 Steve.
website www.seatbeltplanet.com
I've attached what I purchased with part numbers, quantities and current price.
The mounting angle brackets are available with or without hardware as kits.
The number on the attachment is incorrect.

Good luck!

I don’t remember all the details. It was ten years ago. But I know it involved 1-3/4" angle iron across the full width of the vehicles in my coupe, Tudor, and pickup, mounted on the underside of the body.
