'37 head markings?

Pulled an old engine out of a barn today - has markings I've not seen on my 59's or 8ba's. What do they indicate?

Thanks,

Gordon

Those no. are the fireing order. There was thread a short time ago that showed that. I think there heads made out of the USA. walt

Those heads are probably 77E-6050. That is the firing order and cylinder diagram cast on the head. These cast iron heads replaced the aluminum heads 78-6050.

Yep or 77B. My car was equipped with 77-6050A on the left and 77E-6050 on the right. Apparently a couple of variations of the "77-6050" cast iron heads are out there.

I believe these are English heads as used on the Ford Pilot. Many were shipped to the US as replacements for the early 21 stud engines.I have a pair of NOS ones on a 37 engine.

Information about these heads - 77-6050 - as used on US produced Ford vehicles can be found on page 5-18 of The Early Ford V-8 Club of America's 1937 Book; also see pages 4-36 and 4-37 of the Early Ford V-8 Club of America's 1938-1939 Ford Book; also see page 282 of the V-8 Affair.

I have a few NORS pairs of the 77-6050a heads for the 21 stud engines. The casting dates are 4-16-46 and 4-18-46 so these were cast replacements. I have a set of the 77-6050E heads on my engine right now which are the English Pilot heads.

On the Van Pelt Flathead spec page it mentions that the 77 series Cast Iron heads were a 7.5 : 1 compression. Is there any truth to that? Can anybody verify?

year Model Displacement HP Compression Compression pressure
1937 77 221.0 85 6.12 (alum heads)
7.50 (C.I. heads) 100 lbs

I have those E's on mine.. Wouldn't be surprised if they are 7.5:1 pulls like a freight train for little motor.
