Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie I started to clean up the rear end in my shoebox woodie yesterday. All of the internals within the pumpkin look good upon initial inspection, but I need to get the axle shaft and hub assemblies out so I can change the seals and rear inner wheel bearings.
The Factory manual shows a slide hammer set up with an integral hub puller assembly on it to do the job. I have a slide hammer, but not the proper tool for the pulling job. I also have come to the conclusion that finding one of these is harder than finding hen's teeth. Has anyone run into this before? If so, how did you pull the shaft/hubs out? Thanks in advance, Jon |
Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie bolt the rear drum on back wards you can pull on it or ues a malet to loosen up the axle they are not usealy that tight

Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie Richard,
I just tried, but to no avail. These things are cemented on. The axle shafts are just pressure fitted via the splines to the carriers, correct? or is there something more holding them together in there? |
Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie You did remove the backing plates and axle retainers didn't you?
|
Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie Axle retainers are loose. backing plates are loose but both cant come off until the hub is pulled. This shot shows the drum on backwards per Richard's suggestion. Im young and strong. This didn't budge.

Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie of course I cant upload any picture to the site now...

Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie Since I cant post pictures at this time, I'm just going to throw out a guess and see if you all agree. The car was given to me by my uncle. Its his albatross. In fact, half the parts on the car were stolen by the man who began the restoration including the original flathead. He was screwed on the restoration, and lied to about the true condition of the car. The car had two very poor restorations done to it in its life. My guess is someone changed all the spider and ring gears in the differential, but did nothing with the axle shafts. Before the most recent restoration, the car sat in mud for at least a decade. My guess is the original axle seals were reused and allowed water to seep in; therefore causing rust on the splines.

Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie 1 Attachment(s)
Can you look in the fill/drain holes and see what is going on? They make a slide hammer attachment that will bolt to the axle studs. Might be able to borrow one from a parts place.

Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie The slide hammer type axle puller shown above will get-r-done ! You can rent one from most auto parts stores .

Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie Thanks for the info guys!!!. I sealed the pumpkin back up, and loaded it with mystery oil and ATF. should help.

Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie Alas, I still cant get the damn shaft out. I wish I could post some pictures here, but the site wont let me. Im open to any suggestions.
Thanks |

Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie Have you tried a slide hammer?
I am thinking you might be able to jack it out of there using the bolts that hold the retainer and backplate to the axle. Put two opposing bolts back in. Cut a piece of bar or use a nut and bolt to jam between the retainer bolt and the axle flange. Then back the bolts out a flat at a time, alternating between the two, and jack the axle out of the casing. It might work. Mart. |
Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie I know nothing about this year/model axle! But is there any chance it has inter axle clips?
|
Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie Jseery may be on to something about using clips. I have a 1964-70 Motors manual and it shows an integral housing Ford rear axle that looks similar to what your pictures show that uses C clips on the axle ends. The steps to remove them are:
1. Working through the differential case opening, remove the pinion shaft lock bolt and pinion shaft. 2. Push axle shafts inward toward center of axle housing and remove the C locks from housing. The pinion shaft is visible in your picture showing the gears. Look to see if you can see the clips on the ends of the axle. |
Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie My Motors book shows a break down of the wagon rears and there are no axle clips; just the outer bearing retainer.
They have the slide hammer adapter you can borrow at O'Reilly's. More than a few times I have had to put the rosebud on my torch and heat the end of the axle housing in combination with the slide hammer to get them pulled. |
Re: Pulling rear hub and axle shaft assembly on 50 woodie Rich, then it's the bearing in the outer end of the axle that is tight?
