1940 Voltage Regulator
 

I just purchased an original 1940 voltage regulator. It is in excellent shape. I took the cover off to look at the insides; it looks 'brand new'.

How can I test this regulator to find out if it is in good working order?

This apparently is a dumb question? I have received no replies at this time. I just am NOT an 'electrical guy'. I know I could install it and, if the engine starts, it is OK, I guess? But, hey, what do I know?

There are several things you can do but connect a voltmeter across the battery or from the battery terminal to ground and it should never go over about 7.4V and the dash gage should be about to the red. As the battery charges up the voltage should drop down towards 6 volts and the dash gage should be in the green. If you connect an ammeter in series with armature terminal it should never go over 30 amps and then back down to 2 to 4 amps or so when he battery is fully charged.

There are instructions in maybe about a 1950 Motors manual on how to make the adjustments if necessary. To do it right it would be better to substitute a resistor for the battery as the battery voltage changes while you are trying to make adjustments. For a rough check the above should tell whether its working or not. You may have a good one there that won't need any adjustment.
