Recommendation needed for add on turn signal system
 

1930 Model A Deluxe Coupe; 6 v positive ground system.
I want to add a reliable turn signal system.
Would prefer one that incorporates existing cowl and rear lighting if anyone makes such... (trying to keep this car somewhat 'original')
I already switched headlights to LED, wow what a difference.
Any source to replace the cowl and rear light blubs to LED as well?

I have the same car as yours. https://www.ledlight.com/6-volt-posi...ed-lights.aspx carries a full line of LED bulbs. I have amber 12-SMD LED bulbs in my cowl for turn signals. I changed headlight reflectors to 2-bulb and added wiring for the parking lamps. Soft white bulbs for park & tail, 30-SMD red brake bulbs shine bright red through the amber lenses.

There is also a mod from the vendors to change the cowl socket to double contact for use with both park and signal, but I don't like it, myself.

I just purchased a 1931 Victoria that had the old SignalStat system. It uses the narrow lights that are mounted between the bumper bars. It works great and also has the emergency flasher feature. You will find them on Ebay and they are not expensive. Ed

When I rewired my coupe I purchased a new wiring harness that had the cowl lights and taillights pre wired for turn signals. Works great with existing bulbs and I left the cowl lens clear rather than change them to orange bulbs. I would probably change the bulbs to LED if I was going to do a lot of night driving. LEDS are great for brightness and using less battery power. HAPPY NEW YEAR to all and have a safe 2021!

I bought a new Signal Stat 900 for my car, and I was very pleased with the hardware itself.

Please be aware that many flasher units are thermal-based. If you install LED tail lights, the flasher may act erratically because LED lights draw less power than what the flasher unit may need to operate reliably. The Ideal 535 flasher fixed most of that problem for me. I used a NOS unit from eBay.

However, if the flasher blinks erratically (or not at all), the signal switch itself is probably NOT the problem. You may need to add loads to the circuits, probably something like this.

I also tried a couple of electronic flashers without any luck. They worked flawlessly with the engine stopped, but both went berserk with the engine running (likely because of the static generated by the spark plugs and spark plug straps).

I installed the Logo Lites turn signal kit on my '31 Deluxe Roadster. I am very pleased with the design and appearance. The small magnetically-mounted (plastic-housed) turn signal control box mounts on the left end of the dashboard and is hardly visible. It operates by push button...push on either left or right to actuate, push again to deactivate. Push both for emergency light. The bright LED signals locate between the bumper bars and are unobtrusive. It draws very little current and will not drain a battery - draws less than .000005 AMP when off. It emits a cricket-like sound when operating. So far it has worked flawlessly for me and you can hardly tell it is there. It is a bit more expensive than some other systems, but I felt the design was worth it.


This system works on 6 or 12 volt, positive or negative ground...it automatically senses the voltage type.

Do a search (top of page), there is a wealth of info there about turn signals. On my 31 I used fog lights in the front and between the bumper lights, a signal stat sw on the column and wired it myself.

I have the SignalStat 900 with Sacramento Vintage Ford wiring harness utilizing cowl lights as front turn / park lights. Everything is 12 volt negative ground LED. I have switchback bulbs in the cowl lights that show white for park/running lights and amber for turn signals. The flasher is from SuperBrights.

It can be a pain during cold weather, roll down the side wind and stick your arm out. Straight out left turn, up right turn, down for stopping. I know some people don't understand hand signals but around me people understand. I will add that if someone isn't paying attention I move my arm up and down rapidly and that gets their attention !

You want to stay as original as possible, good.
Signal-Stat 900. Rear LEDs [turns, tail and stop]. Front turns,[ incandescent cowls and park in higher candle power [10cp] ]. NOS 535 flasher.

The incandescents in the front will put out enough light and add enough resistance to fire a thermal flasher.

A 6v electronic flasher may be able to found now, but, years ago they didn't work.

Positive or negative ground
Self cancelling
Emergency flashers
Not sensitive to load (works with LED lights)

I have two systems on my main drivers and have installed 3 additional sets on the cars of others.

I have a system like that on my 31 Tudor. I really like it and have had no problems. The lights are LED. The control box has a magnet that attaches it to the gas tan to the left of the steering column. Thing that I like was ease of installations and no holes required to mount system.
