'40 - floormat...how do you add brake fluid ??
 

I have almost finished my restoration and just layed the new front floormat.....black rubber ??

How do you add brake fluid without tearing up new floormat??

The mat is NOT black. NO mat in ANY '40 Ford passenger car was ever black. They were all Benton Gray.

If the mat fits correctly, simply pull it up from the back edge.

Are you referring to the underlayment soundproofing mat that goes onto the steel floor? My car has that material, then jute rug padding, then the carpet. I cut out a circle of the underlayment larger than the big rubber plug that accesses the master cylinder and left it there. Then I cut a flap of the jute, leaving it there. When I check the master cylinder, I roll the carpet up from the bottom, lift the flap of jute and the circle of underlayment to get at the cover to the master cylinder. I guess Ford wanted this to be a challenge. He had a few others we all know about....

A couple of years ago I bought a car that someone streetrodded and to access the brake cylinder I had to remove the seat because they put the carpet down on the entire floor and bolted the seat on top of it. I then had to take up the carpet and insulation(glued) and then remove the floorboard to get to it. That is some forward thinking right there...
I cut an access door for it and had to fix the carpet so that it does no longer go under the seat so that I can check the brake fluid now. Evidently the builder never intended to check the fluid ever again.

I bought the floormat from bob drake thinking it was all they had. seems I had asked about a carpet. It has jute and is not glued down.

Not certain if authenticity is your goal within your project. I had assumed it was from your initial post as "restoration" specifically implies you are bringing the car back to authentic / original status.

One must be very careful when choosing parts from a catalog. Remember guys like Drake(example) are salesmen first and foremost. They promote parts in order to sell more of them with little and often no eye on accuracy of description. and / or application correctness.
A perfect example of that is the radiator hoses sold with part number and Ford script for your '40. Never happened in 1940. Many guys show up on the concourse fully expecting those hoses are correct only to learn a deduction is properly taken.

All too often I hear "Drake's (example) catalog says they are correct". Unfortunately a little more research could have avoided that deduction.

My '40 deluxe coupe is an unfulfilled teenage dream that started with what I thought was a pursuit of authenticity. However I was/am hampered with limited small town exposure.
