1936 engine troubles 1 Attachment(s)
Hi Everyone,
I know I am only new to the Barn but I am asking advice again. I took my 1936 out today, her 1st run in the last year. The car went about 4 miles and then started smoking out through the oil filler and though the small pipe coming off the inlet manifold. The car is not knocking or does not sound wrong, it is running well apart from the smoke, plenty of power and no banging from the engine. I hope its not something massive, I am near the end of a long 4 year restoration on this car. Did anyone ever come across this before? I am attaching a photo of the car as it is today, so close to resto being complete |
Re: 1936 engine troubles does the smoke smell like oil? could it be water vapor? does it quit after awhile? if it has been sitting for awhile it might just be some stuck oil rings, rum a little MMO thru the carb and add about a pint to the crankcase. MMO is Marvel Mystery Oil. I just finished (almost) a 36 fordor touring sedan-one family owned

Re: 1936 engine troubles Hi,
yes it smells like oil. and its brining oil up the filler too. it only stopped when i stopped the car. i had the car out about 8 months ago and drove it 30 miles and it didn't do this. The car is not knocking or that. |
Re: 1936 engine troubles What is the oil level on the dipstick? What does it look like?

Re: 1936 engine troubles "its brining oil up the filler too" - Expand on this....
|
Re: 1936 engine troubles it seems to have oil in the smoke, when I took the cap off the filler the top was tripping in oil.
|
Re: 1936 engine troubles During that 4 mile trip, was the engine able to come up to correct operating temperature? I'm thinking you have a combination of condensation and blow-by. I'd drive it some more....
Does the car have it's stock 85HP engine? |
Re: 1936 engine troubles thank you for your help, yes it might be that.
do you think it is pointing at broken rings? |
Re: 1936 engine troubles What's the history on that engine?....Why was it idle for so long?
|
Re: 1936 engine troubles the previous owner started the restoration and then he became sick and it lay for many years, his son told me the engine was completely rebuilt but I have no proof of that,
I had the car out about 8 months ago and drove it about 30miles and it didn't smoke like it is now, since then I haven't really touched then engine, an oil change and thats about it |
Re: 1936 engine troubles Do as alanwoodieman suggested above with the MMO and drive that car....
|
Re: 1936 engine troubles there is a vent located on the oil pan front pass side, make sure a nest or something is not blocking that vent as this can cause pressure to build in the engine and cause this. also remove oil fill cap and clean the oil/dust etc out of it by soaking it in cleaner/degreaser

An engine like the flathead needs to be run. Run it, keep the tow truck number in your phone. It'll probably just run better as time goes on. Strange but true. Unless something is really wrong, most likely is not. |
