I think I can read St Joseph. (St Joe as stated above) is that a well known brand?

Re: pre-war bumper jack ID

It does say St Joseph , I will see if I can shoot it with a little black spray , maybe that will make the letters stand out. More pictures to come. Thanks so far!
Steve

I took a closer look at this jack, here's what it reads on the side:
ST JOSEPHS MFG
MADE IN USA
PATENTED
Then on the opposite side it reads:
TO LOWER INSERT
HANDLE HERE AND
PRESS DOWN GENTLY

any ideas on application , what years , Ford or GM or Chrysler ,etc

Steve, It's not Ford. It doesn't match any supplied by Ford through 1948.
This basic design of jack (with some design changes) was utilized by a number of auto manufacturers as well as after-market.

Heres some pictures and it may just say ST JOSPHS MICH on that side instead of ST JOSEPHS MFG.

Steve, That company supplied jacks to numerous auto manufacturers. The one in your photo is NOT Ford.
Perhaps you might inquire on a GM forum?
By the looks of it, I think yours is an after market jacket intended for generic use.

The Jack was manufactured by Auto Specialties Mfg. "AUSCO", .Saint Joseph, Michigan.
The company made many products for the auto industry. They have been out of business for several years. The wagon in the avatar is equipped with an "AUSCO" jack.
I wore their uniform playing Pony league baseball as a kid.
They also sponsored a Semi Pro baseball team during those years.
