1947 side loader trans seal replacement

Attempting to gather info BEFORE I try to replace the shift shaft seals. My sticking point is removal and replacement of the pins attaching the levers to the shift shafts. Any info appreciated. Did do a couple of searches and ended up with no info. Thanks in advance.

W, Mac Van Pelt's transmission book is a great resource.....used it to do a complete rebuild of my '47 transmission. Mac VP is also a great source of any parts you'll need.

Those seals are fragile, and easily damaged as they are pushed in place. I learned a trick many years ago that will help. Just place paper around the shaft, then slide the seal into place, removing the paper when the seal is in. If the levers are held on by rivets that are peened over, the head on one side has to be ground down to be able to drive the pin out. Examine the levers and shafts for elongated holes from wear, and replace as needed.

After removing the pins like superreal said you might want to use a threaded nut and bolt instead of the pins. I threaded the shift arm also.
That was 20 years ago. No problems yet.
I figured it would be really difficult to peen a new pin tight enough with 0 play especially with the transmission still in the car.
Here's some photos. I did the same to the clutch linkage also.

Are you replacing the seals with the transmission in the car? The side plate may be tricky to remove, because of interference with the pedal mechanism. Anybody know more about that?

WBrown. I did the shifter seals on my '46, and I did it by removing the side plate. Go to post#7 the link below, then the link that is imbedded there as well.

Thanks for the additional information. Since this is my first foray into an EFV8 trans. My first attempt will be seal replacement with the side plate in place. Should that fail, will try the side plate removal option.

I replaced the trans seals on my 41 with the box in the car, but I took the side plate off.
Space is very tight, but you can manage if you slide the pedal shaft to the side.
I think those pins are hardened, so drilling/grinding may take effort.
If you take the plate off keep an eye on the rear selector fork, as it is offset and can go on the wrong way.
