I watched this clip some months ago. Oil aint like wine that gets better with age.

I would suggest you remove the valve cover as you will likely find the same kind of sludge inside the valve chamber and in the return tube mounted on the side. This needs to be cleaned out as well. The oil appears to me to have traces of water emulsified in it. I would only run the new oil a hundred miles or less and then change it again. You may flush more sludge out and you can look for traces of water in the oil. if you do find traces of water you might want to consider replacing the head gasket

A very logical approach. And after the first 50-100 mile change you might want to repeat it . I personally would pull the pan even before I'd put any more miles on it.

This makes me concerened about my car. I have no idea when the oil was last changed before I received the car and changed the oil last summer. The oil that was drained gave no indication that it was THAT bad, but I am tempted to pull the pan and valve cover to check it out. There was a quart of oil my dad had purchased back in 2002 behind the seat. The receipt showed the purchase was for the single quart, so I can assume the oil was not changed at that time nor had it been changed until 2014.

My '31 town sedan sat for over fifty years, the owner before had rebuilt the engine, filled it with oil and maybe ran it once or twice, never leaving the garage. When I got the car in late 2014. I start dismantling the engine when I discover the fresh rebuild, dropping the pan showed still clean oil with little to no sludge, some settling of the oil occurred over those fifty years, but nothing near as bad as I have seen in other cars sitting for that long.
It just goes to show you...you never know what you going to find...in a Model A.

Anyone considering starting an engine that has been sitting for a long time should see this video. How well do you think those rods oiled with all of that gunk in the dipper tray? Did you remember to clean the gunk from the valve chamber also? Rod
