'49-'51 ford,merc.,linc. Hood release

The recent post about getting a hood open after breaking the Bowden hood release brought to mind what I did several years ago to eliminate having to do any major dis-assembly should it happen again.

Great idae, thanks for posting! I made a similar pull, not quite as elaborate as yours though. I do like yours alot better. It will save alot of headaches and cussing for sure.

Damn. I've been feeding a circus midget I captured and locked into the trunk of my '48 for 25 years now. He's just the right size to be shoved up in there and reach the release if the wire breaks, and I slept better knowing I had him on standby.
Well, that ungrateful little creep is going to have to find a real job and a new place to sleep as soon as I get some cable and build that!

Guys, thank you for posting this and your solutions. It never occurred to me what a problem I'd have if the cable broke on my '47. Yesterday I went to HD and bought a Everbilt stainless gate latch cable in hopes it was thin enough and strong enough to be a second "emergency" hood release that I could somehow fashion along side the cable. Turns out the snap hook on the end was thin enough to go into the hole in the hood latch along with the main cable. In about a minute I was done and it works!! Cost was less than $4.

Sorry, it's pretty hidden, so not able to get a good picture to post.

Dick.

51 MERC: On my computer, when I click on your little photo icons, the don't open.
Why is that? I am using windows 8.

51 Merc Ct, when you drilled the hole in the release mechanism, did you take it off the car? I just came in from the shop. I tried to drill it on the car and promptly dulled 2 New good quality drill bits, not the cheap stuff, 1 a carbide. how tough is that metal?. I guess it is possible that I got a couple of bad bits. I will buy some new ones when I next go into town.-----im

Was done on the car using a cobalt drill out of a Harbor Freight (Chinese) drill set.
Drill speed (slow) is critical. As I recall I re-sharpened it once.

51 MERC CT, thanks for your reply. I guess I must have had some bad bits. I will give it another try after I get a couple of new bits. I did try slow speed, and I used an automatic center punch to try and "dimple " the metal to give the bit something to grab. Thanks again, ----Jim

Re: '49-'51 ford,merc.,linc. Hood release

I just fastened a piece of wire into an existing hole in the latch mechanism and when pulled it pulls the sliding part towards the drivers side and unlatches the hood. The wire is hidden behind the top horizontal chrome grill bar.

I'd like to know more about the wire. The hole isn't a problem.

But where does one get that flexible wire and how does one swage that dingus on the end and probably another where the wire loops back onitself?

Hardware store 1/16" cable and aluminum swage sleeves along with some 1/4" flat stock to make a swage tool plus some imagination.

Re: '49-'51 ford,merc.,linc. Hood release

There is a special tool for that, they have them in HD. I needed it done on a cable and I just used their tool while I was in the store. Where there is a will there is a way.
