How is the distributor gear assembly installed? How is it timed? Mine appears to be 180 out.

I don't quite understand what 180 out means. Do tou have a stock setup or a modern setup which changes how you time it?

Are you asking how to time the distributor?
It is possible to be 180 degrees out.

I started with a running engine. I wanted to remove a nurex automatic advance. I removed the distributor assembly (gear). When I replaced it, the timing was 180 out. I then remembered that the cam can be rotated 180 from where it was and make things right. I hope this makes sense.

If you have the 2 piece distributor drive and you should, the shaft can only normally be installed correctly as it is mated to the drive shaft. but if you have a large amount of wear the upper shaft could be installed 180 * off. the upper shaft slot is off set so that it can only be installed correctly. like a screw driver slot on a screw but an off set slot. If that is the case you would have a major amount of backlash.

If your timing is 180 degrees off, it doesn't matter a rat's @$$. Simply set the engine at TDC on #1 using the pin and reset the timing. That will involve turning the points cam on the shaft to the correct position which will take care of the 180#.
It would be a fluke if you managed to put the drive gears back in the same mesh as they came apart. If that drive comes apart, you will nearly always have to retime the engine.
