Now What, should this be???

Hi everyone , just completed the reverse flushing of my 31 roadster and installed the Gano Filter in the upper hose. As i'm looking for leaks I noticed a strange thing happening with my water pump it looks as though the shaft is sliding in and out maybe like a 1/8 in. ?? the pump only has maybe 50 miles on it, its a rebuilt and leakless . is it possible the shaft is moving in and out? what could cause this. if I didn't work on flushing out the radiator I would have never noticed it. Concern would be the fan hitting the radiator and causing big damage. any thoughts on this ?? thanks THE HOOCH

Looks like the shaft was never checked for in and out movement upon installation. Due to wear in the head where the shaft rides a original spec shaft will move. The spec was around .006/.010" clearance if I recall. Today most use the shaft locking collar to keep it from excess movement. If yours has that collar, then maybe it came loose and just needs tightening(if not damaged). The 1/8" likely will not hit the radiator but the danger is supposedly the harmonic vibration could snap the shaft driving it into the radiator. I have seen a quarter inch plus!

Mine had more than a quarter and was a disaster waiting to happen. The fan is constantly pulling toward the radiator like a propeller and will eventually get there, one way or another unless remedied.

Mine had almost 9/16” play (Yikes!) and I bought a leakless pump with the correct end play. I just installed it yesterday.

It goes between the pump and fan, so the pump needs to come off to install and will need to remove fan from shaft. At an 1/8" I would not worry at this point unless you want to. Without knowing what fan you have on the car; You would ether have to pull the radiator/hood if 4 blade or remove hood, lean the radiator forward to get pump out if 2 blade to install the collar. If you go the lean forward, put a piece of cardboard between the radiator and end of fan shaft to prevent damage to the core.

a 2 piece collar would be easier to install:

How's that? You would still have to remove the fan to tighten the screws?

Re: Now What, should this be???

Simple, put the collar just in front of the packing nut.

If using the 2 piece, still have to source the washer from somewhere?

The Bratton's includes a Teflon washer for between the collar and pump.

If I wanted to install a teflon washer I would cut it on a bias and slip it over the shaft.

As my vehicles are not to judging standards I fit a small stainless hose clamp around the pump shaft a cheap and cheerful fix . I was loosing coolant as the pump /fan went ahead and astern . Had them on my cars for years now. I choose a clamp that does not have a sharp edge where the screw is no wear at all on the packing nut .

The vendor may have shipped the leakless water pump without tightening the big nut. It has been a few years since I bought a leakless but it seems like there was instructions to tighten the nut (not too tight) but more than just way loose. You might check that out. Either that or return the pump. The vendors are usually pretty good about that.

Why return the pump? He isn't complaining about a leak. The shaft stop is integral to the cylinder head. Use the collar or build up the pad in the head. Some drill the end of the shaft and tap for a screw to add length.
