1939 ford deluxe accelerator return spring location/installation 1 Attachment(s)
I'm having trouble figuring out how this gas pedal return spring goes.
Here's the spring I got: https://cdn.mysagestore.com/8395aa2f...ig_48-9737.jpg The problem is the spring is not creating any drag for the pedal in the current location I have it. So I assume I've got it wrong, just can't figure out how. here's a pic how I have it installed now: |
Re: 1939 ford deluxe accelerator return spring location/installation In your picture of the spring only the long end needs to be on the upright of the pedal Assy. In the picture in the car the u shaped wire should be orn the other side.actually holding it to the firewall

Re: 1939 ford deluxe accelerator return spring location/installation I just thought about that again the half loop is on the right side. You need to take assembly off the car and change the spring ( wrap it around the bolt to get your pressure

Re: 1939 ford deluxe accelerator return spring location/installation Thanks barnfind08,
so I need to reverse the spring and the U shape end attaches to the firewall? Do you have a pic of one properly installed? I'm still not really getting it. |

Does this help ya? DD https://th.bing.com/th/id/R37dba183d...sl=&pid=ImgRaw |
Re: 1939 ford deluxe accelerator return spring location/installation I think you need to free the eye bolt from the firewall and turn it one full turn and put it back in again. It would be easier to do if the linkage is removed.
Yes definitely offer it to the firewall with the linkage removed and then raise it up against the spring and fit the linkage. Mart. |

thanks guys, ya the pic helps, I'll fiddle with it some more tomorrow. Mart can this be done with the engine in the car? It kinda blocks this linkage. Also are you the Mart from Mart's Garage youtube channel? cause that guy is kind of a legend to me and my dad. |
Re: 1939 ford deluxe accelerator return spring location/installation It should end up as in V8COOPMAN's photo. It isn't an easy chore, but it goes much easier if you start with the inner open loop in place on top of the stud attached to the firewall, then you can use a screw driver on the long portion of the spring to gain leverage and then swing it up and over the arm for the rod going to the carburetor.

Yes, I am that Mart from Mart's garage.
I just looked at a spring and if you look end on the spring with the long end towards you, if you have the short end sticking straight up at lets say the 12 o'clock position, the long end should be sticking down at between the 5 and 6 o'clock position. If your spring is like the one pictured, the long end looks like it is at around the 9 o'clock position. In other words your spring might be a bit difficult to get on. Like David said, it's better to offer the assembly into the car with the spring not engaged on the vertical part of the pedal lever. So offer it in with the pedal in the up position in the car, the long end of the spring sticking down. You might have to pull the spring to get it to this position if it is over wound like I described. Then with the pedal still in the up position pull the spring long end up and hook it over the pedal lever. Then pull the lever up (further winding the spring) and hook up the linkage. I just put up my latest video and by coincidence that shows the throttle pedal. Oh and thanks for watching Mart's Garage. Mart. |

Thanks Mart, and thanks everyone. I got it! The lil bugger was tough but ya I had to bend it basically 360 degrees around. I bent the little sucker a bit getting it right but I couldn't have done it without ya'll! Here's a pic for anyone that may stumble across this thread of the correct position of one of these new springs compared to how I had it in my first photo. |
Re: 1939 ford deluxe accelerator return spring location/installation .
Congratulations! Just for yuks, it's interesting to compare paint on FIREWALL & throttle arm in BEFORE & AFTER pics. DD BEFORE https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attac...2&d=1623454867 AFTER https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attac...9&d=1623604543 |
