Repair of Fender Side Trim
 

Have a late '47 sedan long-door coupe. Front and back passenger side fender trims which are rather thin stainless steel, got squashed a bit by a garage door jamb. They are the 1948 style plain oval round profile.

I seem to remember someone saying in a post that their shape MAY be restored by removing them, laying the piece upside down in a bed of sand, and using a convex shaped tool (maybe i.e. a mason cement joint tool) and pressing the strip back to its oval shape.

Has anyone done that ? How was the result ?

I tried want ad but no responses. C&G's current prices for these parts run $110 and $160 each. Probably worth a try.

Yes they can be hammered back out. I personally would NOT use a sand bag. I use various tools, shapes, materials, files etc etc to get my stainless straight.....ALSO just as important is the amount of time spent getting the shine back after getting the dent out!!!! Here are two things I have done, one is the trim off my 39 Mercury, the other is the beginning stages of repair on my Ford/Mercury hub caps. I have since (these photos) refined my process even more and are getting better finish results!!!! Its hard to tell you ONE hard and fast way of getting it done as I have found the process is constantly changing based from a starting point to the finished product!!!! I can however give you pointer's THE first being SS is a "soft" material SO start with delicate touch BEFORE you increase your strength/vigor!!!

I've used a wood piece backed by thick firm rubber to ease dents out. also I've put pieces of wood in a drill press, trim backed with rubber and gently press on the dents. move slow, gently and check often.
