UPS wants $433 for shipping

Just got a quote of $433 to box, insure and ship a 40 rear fender from New England to Iowa. More than the fender itself! Any ideas how to get it here safely? Bus? FedEx? I know things are higher, but I need to start printing money to keep up with this.

Bus is the way to go.

Said it before & I'll say it again:

BusFreighter.com. It takes a bit of co-operation on buyer & seller but the most economical way to ship if it will fit.

I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but have you tried to find one closer to home?

How much of that is boxing it up? I shipped a '36 rear fender from Minnesota to California in the US Mail and it was under $100--I don't remember exactly. I packed it up myself using heavy cardboard and styrofoam. Rod

I have shipped large things through Fed x and USPS, never had a problem, almost lost a fender I bought using greyhound, label fell off and it ended up in a lost and found warehouse, I had to go down and hunt around for it.

I've used Grayhound for several fenders and they do it reasonable providing there is a terminal at both the shipping and receiving end near by. I just wrap in bubble wrap and then wrap in shrink wrap. If it's an early bulbuous fender I add some wood bracing to help hold the shape. Always have the address tagged to the fender itself as well as the outside of the package. Only damage has been some minor dings from handling.

Willit Stop--the local dealer ran out of new 40 rear fenders some time ago. A guy has to take what he can get in this day and age. The UPS store that the seller got the shipping quote from wanted $111 just to box the dang thing. I suggested owner get a fender box from a body shop and send by bus, but you guys have given me some better ideas. Thank you for the inputs, appreciate all the knowledge and experience.

Shipped a 40 Ford front fender by Greyhound from Tampa to Wyoming for under $100 and it got there in 4 days. Have used them several times since. Always happy endings.

If you have a Fastenall around you, ask them. They do a lot of backhauling and their rates are a lot cheaper than UPS.

I just had a complete exhaust system sent to me. UPS was $140, Fastenal $80. Delivered to my door. Time wasn't bad either.

Fedex is all ways less than UPS

Box it yourself (((if you can build a car you can build a box)))
Strange shapes cost more
Insuance is standard at fedex
If you start a account they charge less

I sent a '36 Ford sedan rear fender from Rochester, NY to California (don't recall the city) by Greyhound bus for under $70.00 and it got there within a week with no damage.

Shipped an o/t fender to a guy in Canada via Greyhound. He had to pick it up in Detroit due to all the issues with crossing the border but it was reasonable and got there with no issues or damage. Just shipped a big tuck gas tank from SoCal to Nebraska for $75.00 with Fastenal. Haven't heard from the buyer about the condition it arrived in but the USPS wanted $100.00 plus insurance to ship it. My local Fastenal didn't have a clue about shipping but they figured it out and the package got to its destination. A friend shipped a complete Model A motor with related parts in 2 boxes via Fastenal from SoCal to TX for $200.00 with $4,000.00 worth of insurance. Hope this helps.

I had to quickly ship Oregon to NY a large but very light package. Fedex wanted $270 for 2nd day air. Post office was $70 overnight....

Last year shipped two 1936 fenders from Chicago to Sacramento for $110. Each fender had foam pipe wrap sleeves duct taped around the whole edge, then bubble wrap on the outside.
