electric fans for mustang 302 in 49 part 2 Got the 49 out today with the 16 inch pusher and two small 6 1/2 inch puller fans installed with Walker radiator and Walker AC evaporator.
Car without AC on ran 200-210F. No freon in AC yet and 95F outside as usual here near Houston. Isn't that a little hot? Would stock fan work better after moving radiator 4 inches forward with a lot of work and eliminating pusher fan? https://fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=283422 |

Most radiators can get by with one fan with a large enough diameter to cover at least 90% of the radiator width on the puller side. A fan shroud will do the rest. Forward motion should cover the pusher side even with an occasional stop in traffic. I'm not saying it's a bad thing but there may be a point where the quantity of airflow stops being effective with too many fans.
The small block Fords cooled pretty efficiently when new. The radiators for the old 289 Mustangs were smaller than a model A radiator although likely more efficient. I'd be testing the thermostat to find out if it's opening all the way or at the correct temperature. Does this set up have an automatic transmission? |

Re: electric fans for mustang 302 in 49 part 2 I agree with rotor. My avatar '50 has a 302. Same shape front end as '49. 6 bladed flex puller fan. No shroud. Never ever heats up-not even a needle width on 100 degree days. Wonder if there is not another issue we are missing? Thermo, collapsed hoses. A 302 therm can be installed backwards too.

Re: electric fans for mustang 302 in 49 part 2 The small block Ford motor generally runs way cooler than any of the GM motors. Maybe check your timing. Can be critical in a 302.

Generally, an automatic transmission won't have a lot of affect on the coolant temperature when plumbed through the radiator. Since the AOD is a lock up converter type transmission then it will run cooler than the old C4 could ever run. |
