'40 and '41 Pickup

What are the differences between a '40 and '41 1/2 ton pickup's?

The Early Ford V-8 Club has a 40-41 Pickup book that should answer your questions.
1940-1941 Ford Pickup Book --- $10 plus shipping and handling.

Re: '40 and '41 Pickup

The '41 has the wide "waterfall" hood emblem, along with two wide trim pieces on either side.
The '41 uses the Ford plate emblem on the rear of the hood near the cowl, and also on the dashboard (which is flat between the instrument cluster and glove box).

The '40 has the narrow hood emblem like the standard passenger car, and thin pieces of trim on either side.
The '40 uses the Ford script at the rear of the hood near the cowl, and also in the middle between the instrument cluster and glove box, which is recessed on the '40.

There are also differences on the hood latching mechanisms, and also on the front cross member depending on engine originally, the 4cyl used a deeper cross member then the V8.

The door glass is just glass on I believe the '40, where on the '41 it is framed in metal (I could have that backwards).

I believe that's it, if I've missed anything please post.

Re: '40 and '41 Pickup

Isn't the '40 tailgate embossed with "V8", while the '41 says "Ford" because of the availability of the 4 and 6 cylinder engines?

Re: '40 and '41 Pickup

On the 40 door, the plate which gives access to the window mechanism is held on by 5 screws and the 41 and later covers are held by 8 screws. My grandfather had several 41 big trucks and none of them had the steel frames but my 47, (also my grandfathers) has the metal frames around the windows. So, I think the frames came sometime after 41. Caveat: I can't guarantee though, that the pickups and big trucks were the same.

As mentioned, get the 40-41 Ford pickup book that is sold by the Early Ford V-8 Club of America. Best $10 you can spend and it will answer almost all of you questions. Especially handy if you are looking to buy one of these pickups.

exactly, all references to V-8 were removed for the 41.

Hubcaps said FORD rather than V-8, likewise the tailgate and hood nose trim.

That 40-41 Two Great Trucks by Howard Towne is a great reference.

You do not have the correct windows. What you have will fit, but those windows are from 42-47. 40-41 did not have the metal frames.

Buy the book. There’s some misinformation here. The book has some very interesting information, and the author really delved into the 1941 model.

That is true.....my 41 was originally a 6 and the radiator mount was further ahead than a 8 to accommodate the longer engine.

1940 and 1941 Ford Half Ton Pickups from the original Sales Brochures. Notice that the 1941 model has wider trim on the hood, extending down into the Grille.

1940 and 1941 Ford Half Ton Pickups. Notice the wider chrome trim on the Hood on the 1941 model. I hope that this helps you tell the differences between the 1940 and 1941 models

Fritz, are you saying my information on the windows is wrong? If so point me in the direction to the info where the the 40-41's had the the metal framed windows. I've had both '40 and '41's and neither had the metal framed windows. I'd be happy to correct my info if you can point me in the right direction.

Another great shot of a 1941 Ford Pick-Up. Notice the wide Chrome Trim on the front of the Hood, extending down in to the Grille.
