rear end identification i have a rear end in my 35 cabriolet that is not a 35 but rather a 37-40 how do i tell what year it is.

Re: rear end identification Well, if it has the original backing plates, 37-38 were cable brakes and 39-40 were hydraulic.

Re: rear end identification 35-36 radius rods which have the spring hangers attach to a bracket towards the end nearest the backing plates on the axle tubes.37-40 has a solid driveshaft so there is a grease zerk on the torque tube to service the bearing.

Re: rear end identification Mike it would just be the rearbones that Deuce Lover mentioned as the 35 36 mounted on the axle and later would be mounted on the ends by the backing plates.

Re: rear end identification *Note....not all '37's (or '38's) left the assembly plants with a solid driveshaft, center of driveshaft bearing, and zerk grease fitting in center of torque tube. These were transition years between tubular vs. solid driveshafts. The additional things to look for on '37-'40 rear axles would be that the rear radius rods/bones attach by the two lower backing plate bolts, and the spring hangers are integral parts of the axel housing assemblies instead of being attached to the back of radius rods/bones as '35-'36 were. So, the rear end "assemblies" from '35 to '40 (+ '41 PU's) are for the most part, interchangeable.

No difference apparent on the outside. Inside, the only difference being the axles teeth changed from 18 to 16, and the matching Spider gear. Those sets are interchangeable. Pull up the link I posted previously for pictures and text. |

Re: rear end identification There's the 10-spline vs 6-spline pinion deal, which I didn't notice as being mentioned. I opened what I think was a 37 recently, which had the 37-up spring hangers, but had the hollow-tube d/s (which many people associate with 35-36), and it had a 10-spline pinion (which is generally considered for earlier). All I'm suggesting is, hard to tell what you really have, without looking inside. And, even then, you probably won't be able to pin down an exact year. And, after you learn all of this, then, for what purpose?
Go with the basics... 35-36 has spring hangers on the radius rods. 37-40 has spring hangers forged on axle housing ends. No zirk fitting on TT means 35 up to somewhere around 37-38. A zirk fitting on the TT means somewhere around 37-38, up to end of that style (40). Some might say 41, but 41 introduces another can of worms (unique spring hangers). Clear as mud? JMHO |
