Clayborne Update !!!

5 Attachment(s)
Starting a new thread as the old one was getting quite long and confusing. Long story short I picked up my stand, ring and block from the machine shop that had it for 3+ months with no final price quote for getting attachments made up. I had waited long enough and given the lack of communication thought it best to start over somewhere else. After talking to a steel supplier here in Madison I contacted another machine shop that is a much smaller operation (2 man shop versus 25 man shop) and took my project there yesterday. When I asked for an estimate till a price quote could be done the owner said about a week or so. We will see if that happens but at least he knows what a flathead is and his father-in-law has one in his garage as a conversation item. As i had the pieces on hand for a day I took some photos of the large ring with some dimensions shown. Hoping for a better result this time around but at least no money was spent at the first place just a waste of lots of my time.

What price range is ok ?? I can think of 2 methods to make it ---possibly 3 depending on metal availble
Are you looking for exact reproductions, or functional reproductions

i have thought of making one for myself before, not that i need anymore projects

Following, I would love one of these stands.

Kurt, looking to have functional reproductions made. Original ring and large plate on other end were cast pieces.

How many are you looking to have made? If you plan to make multiples to sell, I would speak with a foundry about casting them. Your investment would be in the patterns, and the actual castings are somewhat inexpensive and typically priced by the pound.

Question on the legs that are welded to the ring , how long are the legs?

The legs also show 2 bolt holes in each but what pictures I have found when installed it has one bolt in each side. Did that adapter work on more then just a flathead? Of the 2 bolt holes for the early v8 motor mount legs it only uses the upper one .

Re: Clayborne Update !!!

I've seen pictures with 2 bolt holes as well as only 1 on the legs. Also have seen some with longer feet where the legs mount to the block with a single hole or cut off very short at an angle. Since I don't have a complete set of attachments I have no idea of the legs length, anyone have an original they could measure? The plan at this time is to make the rear attachment first then with block in place (shop has block with lift plate installed) to make the front attachment made to fit. My goal is not for 100 percent reproduction attachments but a quality product to use Clayborne stands. Here's a link to a late 60's Clayborne catalog that a Barn member has on the National Ford Tool Collectors website, they had adapters for a variety of engines back in the day.

Re: Clayborne Update !!!

Im guessing from pictures, the second bolt hole was that the adapter worked on another engine.

I also noticed that the slotted indexing holes varied , some have a few like the one at the beginning of this thread and others looked like the have one every 15 degrees or so. Im sure over the years when they were msde there were a lot of changes

I was looking for the length of the legs thinking the large end would be made first because it indexes in the yoke and the rear of the engine floats in the rear yoke

Re: Clayborne Update !!!

Just got a quote from the machine shop to make the stand attachments!! Cost will be $225.00 for each set of attachments so I have placed an order for 20 sets to be made up. The shop will make the first 10 sets in the next few weeks, the other 10 after that. When they have the first set made up I will check it over and post pictures here so interested parties can see what they look like and get an idea about weight and shipping cost. This project is finally happening!!

Re: Clayborne Update !!!

The large diameter end, are they going to be machined out of one piece like the other shop was saying or will they be fabricated?

Hi Gary, I own 3 different Clayborn stands. Are you planning on also making the basic stands, no attachments? Keep in mind that many rebuilders used Clayborn stands and it was not uncommon to see the attachments drilled to fit other engines. I can photograph and measure the attachments I have of my stands.
