Is the noise in my head bothering you?

Hi Guys,
The second gear in my Model A is rather noisy and the noise increases with increased speed. First and top are both fine(normal)
It is difficult to describe the sound, but I suppose you would know what I am talking about. At first I thought it a loose bellhousing inspection cover, that is what it sounds like. It is a horrible noise with a more than normal vibration of the gear lever and only in second.
Funny enough, the second gear in my Chevy is also noisy, similar sound with slight vibration of gear stick but not as loud as the Model A.

Re: Is the noise in my head bothering you?

Might be your 2nd gear slider gear or 2nd gear on your main cluster has been ground into and now the teeth dont mesh right. Trans has to come out to fix. Can maybe see if the teeth are worn down if you take the top off and drain the fluid but my guess is they are.

When you shift are you double clutching?

2nd gear gets the most wear on any manual trans due to the fact you use them every single time the car slows down to go around a 90* turn. Modern trans 2nd and 3rd gears wear and the 1-2 and 2-3 synchros fail way before issues in 1 4 or 5th.

NO, the noise in YOUR head doesn't bother me, but the CHIRP-CHIRP-CHIRP in my Left ear, catches my attention! Seemed to have brought it home from my last Re-Hab. At a previous Re-Hab, I brought home a BROWN, FUZZY floater, in my Left eye.

Re: Is the noise in my head bothering you? -Subject is noisy 2nd gear

Floats,

Most likely it is one or two bad roller bearings inside the cluster gear.

See this thread ....

Even though this thread is about Mitchell Synchro transmissions I have had same problem with a rebuilt stock one. They use same bearings .

See post 26 by Zener242 as he posted photos of the bad bearings from his Mitchell.

Also see my post #30 about the stock transmission that I built which failed the same way.

Noise is VERY LOUD and irritating !!!

It started out that it was a liveable level if I shifted into third at 20 MPH but it got louder as time went along.

If I pushed it up past 30 - 35 in second it got somewhat "quieter".

I too would suspect bad roller bearings.

Thanks Gents,
Much appreciated, but not what I wanted to hear.
I recently replaced a failed roller bearing in the cluster.

Re: Is the noise in my head bothering you?

It could be pitted gears. Open it up and take a look at all you can see. If you have pitted gears you’re fine for a long time (I drove my Tudor for 34 years with a whining 2nd gear). If the gear teeth are badly worn or sharp, you won’t get a lot of life out of them, but it depends on how much and how hard you drive it. I wouldn’t suspect bearings because your noise is only in 2nd. Eventually you’ll have to tear it down. It’s your call now or later.

Oh, and by the way, some of the new gears, even the well made USA gears, will whine. They aren’t as well matched as the originals were. My coupe whined for the first 2000 miles with new Mark gears, but it’s getting quieter.

Thanks Ray,
Yes, I noticed pitted teeth.
Much appreciated

Do not forget the third roller bearing between main shaft and main drive gear!

Re: Is the noise in my head bothering you?

Tks Benson,
The bearings have all been replaced, the two large mains as well as the three rollers. In fact everything inside was replaced, except the cluster.

When he gets sloppy the shifter can pop outa gear, sometimes input shaft noise as well.

Re: Is the noise in my head bothering you?

Yes,
I have just overhauled the tranny because it was jumping out of gear.
Unfortunately, Mr Scrooge here, decided NOT to replace the cluster gear.
I have only done about 30 miles and it works fine and does not jump out of gear but the noise in second gear is really bad.
I suppose I will have to start saving up for a new cluster and a gasket set.

Also if you havent already install the O ring shafts.

Yea pitted teeth can cause all sorts of chatter while typically not an issue its just going to be noisy.
