1933 manifold wiper fitting problem
 

Gentlemen,
I'm in need of direction on how to secure the brass tube that fits into the vacuum compression fitting for my wiper motor on my '33 manifold. I purchased the correct fitting from MACs that comes with the brass tube. The tube slides in fine and the fitting tightens up into the manifold nicely but when I can't tighten any further and I would assume I'm finished the tube slides out with little trouble. What's the trick to keep this air "tight"?

Is the fitting you are using a "Ford nut" or is it a common compression fitting with a brass ferrule? A Ford nut doesn't use the brass ferrule, it necks down and the tapered bottom of the hole it screws into pinches the tapered end of the Ford nut down on the tube to make the seal.

Presumably, It is a Ford nut purchased from MACs with no ferrule. Is it possible I didn't tighten it down enough into the manifold? I thought I took it as far down as she would go. Guess I could try again, right? Thank you, sir!

The end of the tubing needs to protrude past the end of the Ford nut. Off the car the tubing should push through the nut. You may have already forced it down so that the tubing can't get through. If so, maybe use a taper to slightly force it open so the tube can go past the end. Test the tubing without the nut and see if it goes into the manifold past where the opening necks down. There could be a broken piece of old tubing already in there preventing proper positioning of the new tubing. Or maybe the new tubing is larger then it should be. You should feel the tubing go into the manifold hole that is tight enough it will stay there and not fall over. Inspect the hole with a bright light.

The tubing slides freely through the fitting so no problem there. I wii inspect the manifold threaded opening and test with only the tube as you suggested. Here's hoping that nothing is blocking the hole. That would be a pain to rectify. As your following post's photo shows, that is the fitting I have.

i dont like trying to squish the fitting in an aluminum manifold because i am scared of the threads stripping in the process. so, i will screw it into a cast iron part, like manifold or timing cover etc, anything with that ford female boss to get it tight enough to hold on the tube, then install on your aluminum manifold

I will try that! Thank you. This evening I went back at it and peeked at the manifold hole. Doesn't seem to be anything broken off in there yet when I stick the brass tube into that port it gets to a point where it will stop going forward and just barely stick tight. Does that seem correct or should the tube slide in the port fairly deep?

Are you running the stock 33 single barrel intake or a later aluminum 2 barrel intake? Tomorrow I will look at both a 33 and 34 intake I have sitting on a shelf and see how far a piece of straight tubing goes in.

Runs from intake manifold to the dash.
Copper clad steel, includes one brass fitting.
As original in fit and appearance.

Also fits 1933-36 Ford Pickup and 1935-36 Ford Truck.

I am sorry i couldn't get to checking out another manifold today, will do it tomorrow for sure. When you look into the threaded hole, you should see a shape near the bottom that mimics the last 1/4 inch of the outside of the Ford nut. If you don't see a taper in there and then a hole past the taper for the protruding part of the tube, that would be a problem as explained, that is what makes the nut close down on the tube.

I do see what you mean. That is what I see. A taper to the exact size of the brass fitting then a hole the same size as the opening in the fitting. Looks correct to me.

If yours looks just like this and not sealing, the end of the tube must not be going in the hole past the taper and it is pinching down on nothing.
