Amazon has the 6 volt Optima for cheaper than the other vendors.

When I put the Optima in my car I used the hold down made from angle iron made for a group 1 battery ---it must fit good enough ,the battery must still be there, it still starts,

Googled 6V optima the other day ---115.48, free shipping, amazon, com, i have been wondering how long mine will last, so far 14 years, had looked to see how much a new one is.

GEEZ! Kurt, 14 years! My kids, (OLD) can make extra money sellin' my OPTIMA after I croak. I've been told that I can take Vermin with me if the battery's removed & ALL fluids are drained! I'm comin' Chief:D Bill W.

I have a special care regimen to ensure long life ---neglect and abuse, never charge with a plug in charger for longer than 10 min in 10 years, if the engine won't start after prolonged cranking use the starter to drive the car out of the garage, and use a unregulated generator set to 15 amps. ---actually I do have a regulator, I turn on the headlamps when I think the battery has been charged enough.

I use the Optima and it is great battery. First i used a old lead one but the optima turns theengine round like a new one.

Re: Optima battery

Josh, Amazon is usually the cheapest place to buy an Optima. Optima only has one model of a six volt, so you can't go wrong. It's half the weight of a lead acid and mine (2) lasted six years each. You don't need to check the water level either, a nuisance with a Tudor Deluxes carpeting. Price about $130. Downside: You will go through hell trying to get a warranty settlement from Amazon, who is not a licensed agent for Johnson Controls( Optima). So from a defensive position paying $20 more may be a safer bet if the battery fails in 3 years( warranty length). Vendors sell a bracket for the optima.

Re: Optima battery

Mine lasted almost 7 years. I got it, and a bracket, from Bert's. I bought my replacement from them as well. Great battery, well worth the premium over a standard battery.

On amazon there is a warning that states that warranty is invalid if you use halogen headlights !

The Optima RED TOP Battery for 6 volts is the starting battery.
Optima also makes Marine and Deep Discharge with different colored tops.

Re: Optima battery

model A aol, I have Optimas in two other cars and they use Group 2 size 6 volt and that dummy box works well, however the Model A uses a Group 1 smaller dimensions. I did not believe that a group 2 will fit in the As battery tray, and the 6 volt Optima will not fit in a hollowed out Ford script battery box ?? Will it?

MrTube 02-26-2013 08:53 PM

Re: Optima battery

I like the cloaking device but it concerns me in regards to cooling. Won't this risk overheating the battery if its discharged a lot? Or is the "A"s stock system just too weak to pose a risk?

The battery that is sold for show cars is an optima in a Ford case.

Re: Optima battery

The group 2 does fit the A battery box,and fits it better than the group 1.Exact fit to the box and hold down.No extra room like the group 1 has.The next size up,like a golf cart battery won't fit though,or a 6 volt truck battery either.I had thought group 2 was a thing of the past, but I spotted them in the new Batteries Plus store a couple of years ago.The manager there said that once the old car guys got wind of them they started selling like hotcakes.I never saw the need for an optima, all of my 6 volt batteries are between 5-10 years old.No special care,no trickle chargers, nothing.I just make sure there is no drain while sitting.

Re: Optima battery

I bought my optima rated @800 cca from NAPA and the hold down bracket from Snyder's. It fits the battery very neatly and is a good clean setup.

Best bolt-on upgrade to the Model A there is.

Changed my regular lead acid battery recently after I noticed the old one was cranking a little slower. The old one lasted 8 years and the replacement was $78. I think I'll stick with the lead/acid.

That's totally cool. Some guys like to tinker and fuss over stuff. Also, acknowledge that the Model A car is a hobby to most guys here.

Speaking only for myself, the Model A car is NOT a hobby, it's a car we depend on. And, as an electrical/electronics engineer, I don't enjoy fussing over electrical stuff. Much prefer to fix it and be done with it. For like minded people, the Optima is the best upgrade to the Model A.

Re: Optima battery

In my opinion, typical Model A charging systems are hard on Optima batteries and alternators may be worse (too many electrons up the snoot too fast). Last year I removed from a Model A a dead 6V red top Optima (dated 11-2003) which registered less than 2 volts and charged it with a desulfating battery charger made recently specifically for AGM-type batteries (a cheap one from Schumacher) repeatedly over several days (after peeling back part of the label and adding distilled water until no more was accepted through the breather port on top) and now it starts Model As like new and tests good on a load tester.

It is now part of my tool box and I haul it around to troubleshoot and start 6V cars. I think the life of any battery and particularly Optimas can be greatly extended by using the proper battery charger regularly to supplement the car's charging system.

What is recommended for a 12 volt car? Which optima part number? Amazon too?

Re: Optima battery

I bought a 12V red-top part #8025-160 Model 25 from a hot rod shop in Kansas (or Nebraska?) through Amazon for about $100 less than what it would be from a local dealer, who would have to order one with an indeterminate arrival time. I used Prime then so shipping was free. A friend got one shortly after me for ~$5 less; different hot rod shop that popped up as the cheapest on Amazon then.

I'm ordering one of the cases below from Quail Services to hide my Optima. It's $95 plus shipping and I like look.

They also have a less expensive model that doesn't have the simulated cell leads for $78 plus shipping.

rons49 03-02-2013 11:23 AM

Re: Optima battery

Mafman, please advise us if the Quail box fits in the original model A tray & what will you use for a hold down? My original holdown is too short by an inch to fit over a Quail dummy optima box. I tried one from another car that I have that exact Dummy on. The As use a smaller group 1 vs the Quails Group 2 size.

Re: Optima battery

James, just noticed that the terminals are reversed, like the LF2 later Fords. The Model As are opposite; you may have trouble with cable position through the right of the brake pedal and the guide. And of course no Ford script, if you care. Do they sell the case with the correct terminal position for As?
