As Larry Hierholzer from Michigan said : EDSEL Ford styling exploits: THE 2 DOOR DELUXE PHAETON 180A ..When you think about it, WHO ELSE out there made a TUDOR PHAETON body style???? Fine story done by Larry in the Model "A" News mag. in May/June 2002.

I am sure they did not have FINE POINT JUDGING in their mind...If you want to go down the list then the ON / OFF plate for pop-out , late 1931 brake drums. l.o.l...if you were to go over every car at the Henry Ford Museum you will find a lot of repops.

Refer to post #5 about the headlamps. Has anyone else noticed the Panhard rod on the front axle? It's mounted to a one-off front spring clamp. I'd like to see more detail shots of that chassis. |

Re: Edsel's Dual-Cowl Phaeton up for Auction I found more chassis pictures, click on the Hemming's link in the first post and then do the same on the Mann's Restoration and Maintenance link found there. Looking at the chassis pictures it's easy to see that the front axle has much more of a radius to it. The deep radius gave a lower mounting point for the spring perches and gave us what may be the very first Model A dropped axle ever! I'm not sure but the perches themselves might be different too, but even if that isn't so look at the brake actuators- they are angled down to correspond with the deeper axle radius. Also, one photo shows the tie rod with a dropped center section to clear the engine and the front wishbone is different right at the yoke where it attaches at the perch.
As far as the rear end goes the Hemming's text explained that the rear axle was narrowed 8 inches (something that I can't see the need for; anybody else?) and mounted on semi-ellipticals as on a AA truck. Must be loads of other detail changes there too, but I'm not a hard core Model A guy so I don't know. |

Re: Edsel's Dual-Cowl Phaeton up for Auction I've always liked the looks of that car ever since I saw a photo in an old Floyd Clymer book back in the 1960's. So glad it is still here and restored. I read some were that Edsel liked the looks of Hispano-Suiza, they used Grebel headlights. Henry had the good taste to admire Alfa-Romeo. Bob
