Just picked up a 47 ford two was thinking of building a street rod what are your thoughts? The car need a total restoration. Thanks Pete

Why not post a few pics of what you're starting out with? I'd like to see it.

Do what you want with your car and have fun. Before you cut off the suspension and start a huge project you might not finish, try getting it running and driving in stock form. The stock suspension, engine, and brakes, driven defensively and at the right place and time, is plenty safe and lots of fun.

My stock, unrestored '46 runs great and didn't cost a fortune. The flathead is a challenge but I've gotten it running well with all stock pieces and without high-dollar parts. Some people move their cars away from mine at car shows but that's part of the fun. Go for it!

I would think that a "street Rod" is an old car that has been updated for safty and performance for todays trafic. But left in it's original form. Working on the suspension, brakes and increasing performance to produce a reliable car. Some of us get darried away, but building an old flathead powered car than can cruise saftly at 70 MPH and get 20mpg would make Henry proud, and we've already done that. Now we'll improve in that.

It may be less expensive in the long run to sell what you have and buy a finished 1947 Ford street rod as they are very plentiful.

Ok thanks I was thinking i would have around a 40,000 dollar budget, would like to make a nice drivin car to hand down to my grandson when we are finished with it.

Go for it. It's your car ,do what makes you feel good. I love all styles,stockers ,street rods.,and hot rods. The folks on the Barn,are good people with some great advise about Ford's. Ask away,I'm sure the right people will give you the right advise.

agree, with this economy, there are some really good bargains out there! last week, i seen an all original driving, rust free, 39 deluxe 2 door go for 7700.00! im still not over that!

My thoughts exactly. Unfortunatley when some people hear "street rod" they think of modern engine and lots of "billet":)

Hi, welcome, if your 47 will have a ford flathead v8 in it then this is the right message board for you. from what I can see,some of the best builders around are regulars here.

right now you can buy a completed car for less than you can build one,also some thing to think about when making changes on a car, for every change you make you will have to make two more, (radiator, hoses, gas lines, exhaust) and so on, think it over and see if its worth the trouble

Sure, you might be able to buy something for less than the cost of you building it, but what fun is that?

Welcome to the Fordbarn! Regardless of how you decide to build or rebuild your car, there are many people here who will be more than willing to help you with your questions. You will not necessarily have to go to the HAMP to get answers although that is a good site for answers as well. There are many members here who own stock/original cars, hot rods and street rods.

I'd like world peace and and end to hunger.
I should tell my wife and kids I love them more often.
I really need to get a lift for my garage.
Should I use enamel or urethane?
Maybe I should swap my differential for that posi.

Flat jack 9 my thoughts actually , want a project with the grandson and when we are done it will be his. Something that he can keep and remember the hard work we did together.

so what are you thinking of doing to your car??.....like has been said, there is a lot of knowledge on the 'Barn, so keep posting and maybe you can get help here.....and it's great that you are doing this as a project with your grandson.....maybe he wants a stocker??...lol...good luck....Mike

but, may i add, if you are going to do a street rod, do it like how they did in the 50s.dont go too crazy. street rods these days are way too done up. i like the original street rods.
