Got me a Mercury

2 Attachment(s)
Went to a garage sale yesterday and came home with this!
Not a spot of rust anywhere on it.
I was dumbfounded when I saw it sitting there

Good Job!! Beautiful car. Doesn't appear to need much but exercise.

Re: Got me a Mercury

Bumpers are rechromed and still wrapped up, new glass all the way around, the grill is absolutley cherry, and the entire bottom has been painted in POR 15.
Yes it has the flathead in it and it is going to stay in it. It also has dual exhaust.
It was the find of the year, thats for sure

Are you more upset that you haven't found any cars or that there is nothing in your size in the women's clothes? :D LOL just kidding!

I found this 1970 Bradley GT at a garage sale 2 blocks from my house. It was interrupting me finishing my 36 Cabri SO I sold it... Had some excitement & fun because I went to a garage sale on a wim. My step Grandkids loved it they also love my 36 & the Rumble seat.

The plan is just to get it safely on the road and keep driving it

Re: Got me a Mercury

You could do alot with that one!

Re: Got me a Mercury

Your biggest problem will be the brakes, they just can't work in today's trafic. Put a set of disks on the front.

Re: Got me a Mercury

Ditto on the disc brakes.
I installed this kit from Extremekustom (suspect the same as Jamco)
Relatively easy installation and allows use of original wheels.
But, because it is installed on Fatman spindle supports there is a clearance
problem with the caliper. This is what I did to correct the problem.

Re: Got me a Mercury

OK, So i found it at a garage sale. That part you know.
My "smart phone" has this thingy on it that tells me when certain items are available on craigslist. I had a search saved for "flathead" and the lady that posted her garage sale, included in the ad that "there is an old mercury with a flathead V8 in the pole shed"
That is what triggered the notification on my phone. There was no phone number or pictures, only an address, which happened to be about 10 miles away from where i was at the time.
I headed that direction and she was shocked to see anyone had seen the ad already, as it had only been posted for about 20 minutes. I looked it over for about 10 minutes before buying it on the spot. Honestly I wanted to get the deal done before someone else pulled into the driveway. I did not want to get into a bidding war with someone who had more money than me, which is about everyone in town!
I am very fortunate to have found this car. Her husband wanted so badly to restore it, but they are in thier 70's and simply can not do it.
I promised them a ride when i got it running, and they were very excited about that. They were both very nice people.
I am excited to get it running and check over all of the safety items, other than that It will stay original for now.
As far as price...... I will just say It wasn't $500, but it wasn't $5000 either.

Thanks for the info. I couldnt find anything on Extremekustom. Are they still in business?
Any other tech tips you have, feel free to pass them along.
I have always had older fords, this is my first merc. so I need all the help I can get.
Is Jamco a good business to deal with? I thought I remembered some posts of folks buying stuff and never recieving it once the money was sent.

Re: Got me a Mercury

So, assuming it was under $5000, you got a good deal!! Way to go!!

Re: Got me a Mercury

You'll love this.
This car is absolutely perfect. NO RUST ANYWHERE
The bumpers have all been rechromed. Theyre still wrapped in the paper from the chrome shop.
All of the glass is new green tinted glass
There is a..do i dare say this? NOS grille with it.
The entire bottom from tits to tail has been cleaned and painted with POR 15
It came with a brand new wiring harness.
All of the gauges have the 12 to 6 volt reducers on them.
There is an old NOS spotlight in the box.
I'm sure I am leaving something out, but you get the idea.

The disc kit was bought from Extremekustom on Ebay (don't think they are selling them anymore and they were selling them as a secondary seller for Jamco ) Along with the disc's you will have to convert the master cyl. to dual plus a few other components.

Re: Got me a Mercury

I'm supprised this isn't cured in the kit, It should be a bolt on. Does Speedway have a kit??

funrunr 05-17-2012 04:18 PM

Re: Got me a Mercury

Check with Magnum axle, that is where I got mine for my 40, MP Brakes might have it also. Mine was a bolt on.

This is a bolt on kit for stock suspensions. My suspension is not stock with dropped spindle supports (to lower) thus the necessary modifications. Any other kits that I know of require machining of the spindles and do not allow use of original wheels.
