34 Ford longest known build ? Who has the "record" for the longest build known? I have to be in the running for the crown.
No kidding... after owning this car for over 45 years it is finally going off to the body shop and paint in mid July. One heck of a lot of work and money has transpired or been spent in the last two years. Darned if I know why it took this long but I see light at the end of the tunnel. I think my wife wants it done more than me and that's a good thing. All three sons were going to drive the car to their H.S senior proms when done... never happened that way! Maybe(big maybe) I'll to let my grandson drive it now. Smart $$ would have sold it and bought one done. Though I think my $40.00 initial purchase price may have appreciated somewhat over the years. |
Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? Take your time, don't rush to complete it. I think alot of us here would admit that the joy is in the work. Once it is done, we start looking for another project. Anticipation is very rewarding.

Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? I may have you beat, have had my 34 since 14 yrs old and I am now 60! I did drive it briefly at age 16. Just started on it about a year ago and have a long way to go. Engine is rebuilt so far but I have no plans to restore it, I just want it back to a driver so I can enjoy it. The cost is just out of my retired pay grade! Cost at age 14 was $500. Ken

I have been working on my 1934 Phaeton since 1963. It cost me $600.00. But, with it, came a pair of mint shiney black NOS front fenders, NOS mint rear fender, NOS W/S frame, NOS shiney black spare tire cover, NOS hubcaps, Pair of NOS bumpers, NOS mint grill shell, a glove box radio and numerous mechanical parts. The fellow, from whom I bought it, knew what he was doing and collected most of the parts through "HEMMINGS". About all of the NOS parts are still waiting for the restoration. NO, I do not want to double my money ! LOL MIKE :) |

Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? My brother bought a '32 in '58 for $50. I've been trying to get it somewhat back together for the past few years.

Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? My dad bought my car in 1958. He got it on the road in 2005. I bought it just before he passed away in 2008. I do a little more work on the car each winter. So Sally has been a in build status for at least 46 years or more depending on the definition of build.

Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? Great stories ! Finishing touches to the grille and hood alignment and stripped the interior today and I think it's ready for a new shiney coat of paint.
My 34 five window was a "beach buggy" at the Jersey shore when I found it. Channeled over the frame,no front fenders, bobbed rear fenders and a surf board sticking through the roof. Love at first sight. Had a Buick nailhead in it but the owner wanted the motor so I got it without an engine or trans. Spent many day at swap meets over the years digging up parts as I could afford them. Always found time to work on the various builds my three sons had but never completed the 34... guess that's how it works ! Now it's back up to stock height, new frame and wears Henry sheet metal all the way around. Motivation now comes from a small block Ford. I think after all these years I am over due to drive the rubber off it. Pictures to be posted after returning from vacation in So Calif . Post more I love it! |
Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? Loaded the 34 on my trailer for it's trip to the body "massage" parlor and paint. Finally after all these years she gets fresh paint. Many mixed emotions...I know it's only a car but my youngest son (30+) told me he dreamed of the day he would get to drive it. Confided that he used to sit it it when he was small , make engine sounds and fantasize about driving the car. Never knew that but, very cool!

Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? I was feeling a bit down about the 11 years on my 1933 Cabriolet but reading this made me feel a lot better.

Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? I have had my 34 pickup since 1979. Things like raising a family and a sedan being more important for family needs put it on the back burner. It's up to the paint stage now. I thought I was the slowest ever. You have just allowed me to feel a lot better!

Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? I don’t feel quite as bad now. Had my 35 for only 35 years.

Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? I hate to skid everybody's rig on this one but My Dad bought his '36 Fordor in 1938. He brought both me and my brother home in it from the hospital in '40 and '45. He signed it over to me in 1966 when I was 21. Fast forward to today it is still 90-95 original....It runs great and I don't care if I ever get it mint ! As some blogger said "anticipation is great" and the 'ole girl always needs some tinkering !
To put it another way : An old feller was once asked how far he could remember back and he replied that he could "Remember the night he went to the dance with his dad and came home with this mother" !!! |
Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? Been to the body/painter at least one day a week since the car went to shop. Body is off the frame and on dollies and skim coat is all but done. Going to epoxy primer soon I am told. Can't believe this step is taking so long! Tried to load pictures but this darn computer and/or site will not process them!

Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? It took me 30 years for my frame off of a 40 coupe. At 30 years and 8 months I'm still working out the bugs. They are never done.....

Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? I bought my 1934 pickup in July of 1957 and stored it for restoration in 1968. After a 10 year resto it finally got on the road on June 24, 2009. Just got a Best in Class Award at an All Ford Truck Show in Arthur Ontario, on Sunday. Byron.

Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? I got my 34 5 window in the late 70's and on the road late 80's. It's been driven everywhere, west coast, east coast & many places in between. It has all original Henry steel. Sadly it got rear ended two weeks ago & finding original rear fenders & gas tank apron is not looking too promising right now. Any leads?

Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? Parents bought my 32 Woody in '67 when I was four. My mom got ill and passed away eight years later and my dad just wasn't up to working on it. Fast forward to 2004, I decided it was time to start working on it, still am.

Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? Got computer problems here. Tried different approaches to no avail.
Good news though, shop wants final color choice and scheme by Monday! Very cool! Taking much longer than I had hoped to get this far but I guess that is the body/paint business. Epoxy paint is in cure stage and filler primer/block sanding, guide coat scheduled to start next week or so. Had some issues with the original bodyman..delicate situation. Said he never had to guide coat his work and he was ready to shoot epoxy primer? Asked the owner to look at his work. I guess he agreed with me. Pulled the guy from my car and has his shop manager doing all the work now. No expert here, just enough mileage on me to know what good work should look like. Plus, I am paying the bills, and felt I was cheating myself if I hadn't said a thing and ended up with a S**t job |

To post thumbnail photos, I have found that they can be no wider than 800 pixels wide. That is also a good size for e-mailing photos too. MIKE :) |
Re: 34 Ford longest known build ? Picked up the last painted parts for the 34 today and made final payment. The paint and body work look superb! Color chosen is a dark blue with a tinge of deep purple evident only in the sunlight. Opted to have very subtle shadow flames done on both the body sides and the fenders. The guy that did the flames is truly an artist....beyond expectations and overall I am glad I chose the shop I did. Assembly will be slow and painstaking over the winter. Difficult to restrain my enthusiasm after so many years but I feel like a kid on Christmas morning! Try to post pictures after resizing.
